Broader exposure to agriculture and a learning curve

It is good to be in the company because you get to be exposed to different agricultural fields. The main objective of the company is research. My main job is glasshouse work of which i do the following: Manage and maintain a Glasshouse (Maintenance, soil preparations, Seed processing, planting, treatments, harvesting, and storing), Assist in projects of fellow colleagues,Manage and maintain all equipment’s used in a glasshouse, Emasculation and Pollination, lastly, field work. I enjoy team work and getting the results and always ready to take and work on new projects.

Pros: Good platform to expose yourself to agriculture
Cons: Less benefits

Great experience and valuable learning experience

Work start at 7:30 am and ends at 16:00 Monday to Friday. Every week I get a new task and have to compile a report at the end if every week. I work alone in my tasks and sometimes we. Work in groups. I have learned so much in this period of my internship. I've been exposed and well equipped in plant pathology specifically plant disease inoculation and breeding. I work well with all my colleagues and my supervisors. The post challenging aspect is disease inoculations but I enjoy breeding very well.

Pros: Growth in the research environment
Cons: Standing for long hours

Excellent learning environment, networking with various researchers from diverse companies

Ability to study and incorporate work with studies not office bound, be able to work in the field and in the office site visits to different locations nationally able to present studies in conferences, seminars or workshops challenges are stressful during peak times eg planting, harvesting and trial management especially for trials outside the research station

Pros: great area for learning
Cons: trial management

Growth in independence.

We are always researching on the latest database of a region, well equipped with Microsoft,Excel and PowerPoint. I have a great working relationship with my employers and employees. I have learnt to be independent, to rely entirely on my work ethic and focus on reaching goals. The most frustrating thing is being alone and having to think independently without mentorship and guidance.

Pros: Being exposed to better opportunities.
Cons: No monitoring and evaluation.

Happy to work and like the environment

Its a very good research company with friendly faces and welcoming people. The company balances work and life style. Academic development well structured. The nature of the job is mostly office work. As the only buyer for the institute, I spend most of the day acquiring quotes and buying research equipment, research consumables and maintenance of the institute. . The company has given me the opportunity to grow as an individual. Mostly it working closely with suppliers which has helped me improve communication and presentation skills.

Pros: great for furthering your studies
Cons: No promotions, lack of transport to the institute, no benefits, not enough challenges

She was involved in a garden project which is a bit out of her field, she had managed and dish work out to ten young men, acting as facilitator and manged them. She can adapt and manage to fit in the team.

Pros: Salome was exposed to all the aspects of vegetable production in a community project , from soil sampling, soil preparation, demarcations of plots, fertiliser application , irrigation installation , seedling production, transplanting and direct sowing of spinach, carrots, beetroots and cabbage, maintenance of the crop, chemical control of pest and diseases.

Center of excellence

So far, I have managed to achieve objectives and goals that I have drafted after Undergraduate studies. After the employment of National Research Foundation and Agricultural research council , I have developed love in traveling and working in the field researching with the farmers.I felt inlove with small scale farmers during farmers day at Mpumalanga when were demonstrating how farming works and encourage them to use chemicals and fertilizers to enhance their plant production. The challenges, that I have encountered is when, I was having a deadline which caused me to have sleepless night for several days. Moreover, I love soil classification and survey so that I can recommend for site specific management and land use planning for some specific fields. I have gained 12 months experience 01/04/2016-31/03/2017 with National research foundation where I was placed at University of Venda. At Agricultural research council I have gained 20 months experience from 01/04/2017-till to date

Pros: Marvelous opportunity
Cons: 8 hours a day

My work experience

A typical work day involves planning and doing quality management duties according to schedule. Ensuring that co-workers abide to schedule. Ensuring that documents are issued and revised. Training on quality management. I interact with colleagues on a day to day basis regarding their specific needs per laboratory..eg. Root Cause Analysis, Customer communications, document review and issue..etc I have learnt how to work with different types and characters of people. I enjoy training of colleagues on QMS and doing Root Cause Analysis because that is the only time I have to hear the views of colleagues towards quality and ideas to help solve the problem at hand. Challenges includes when people do not understand your training or do not want to comply to the QMS requirements.

Pros: Great opportunity for studying
Cons: No growth in current position
