Operational Efficiency

I have progressed over a period of 6 years within ACSA from a Support Engineer position (1 year) to the position of Manager: Maintenance and Engineering (2 years). As Chief Aerodrome Engineer (last 3 years), my direct reports are 6 engineers (Mechanical, Electrical and Civil), and the team renders technical planning and support, including projects recommendations, initiation, planning and execution through to general maintenance and engineering support for 7 Domestic Airports and the new Durban King Shaka International Airport in the ACSA network. This team has been the core of the ACSA engineering team, under my leadership, tasked with delivering, from construction through commissioning and testing to acceptance, on behalf of ACSA, the infrastructure for the new King Shaka International Airport. I am currently the Assistant General Manager: Airport Operation Services for King Shaka International Airport.

Pros: Variety of work

Growth

The work environment at ACSA (Airports Company South Africa) is a great place and my co-workers they are wonderful people and always will to help. I have learned so many things like which vendors support what within the Airport. And if a client is not sure I always go an extra-mile by investigating and provide the necessary information to the client without wasting anyone's time. What I enjoy the most about my job is making someone else day great, I always try my best to make that person feel welcomed. Because I believe whatever good thing we do end up building us. Most challenging aspect is when someone doesn't want to give me a chance to help them, meaning she/he wasn't getting the correct information, but in that case I always advise the user as well if ever I am not sure about something then I will investigate and provide more detailed information. Other than wasting someone time.

Pros: Team work
Cons: Working extra hour without being notified.

MV-LV maintenance, Supervision, Istallations and Commisioning, Testing and Certification

With the team reporting to myself, we are responsible for continuous supply of electricity to the airport to make aviation possible. We are therefore responssible for Substation maintenance, Distribution Board, Generators for back up supply and UPS supply. As a supervisor I schedule maintenance programs for both the team and the contractors on site. As we are also responssible for supervision of contractors, we also do project management. I am also responssible for daily routines for staff members that report to myself.

Pros: in 2013 I was appointed as 1st/Supervisor Electrician from Senior Electrician position. I was promoted before from Electrician to Senior Elkectrician in 2008.
Cons: Before I was promoted to Supervisor position I worked 7 years as a shift worker, doing 12 hours for 4 days in a week.

Not adaptive to best practice and evolving trends

I love a challenging environment that forces me to stretch my knowledge and skills, however I also respect mature organisations that adapt to 21st Century trends and truly puts people first. I believe that role clarity and having set and clear expectations which are openly communicated, gives one room to succeed and thrive. I also believe that trusting people's capability and ability to deliver and not micromanaging them, brings out the best in them. I am one such person.

Pros: Great job security
Cons: Unclear roles and very behind on best practice of mature companies
