Caxton Reviews

Excellent Learning curve

I really enjoy my job - I get to meet hundreds of new people on a daily basis. I also enjoy the art of selling ad space in the newspaper. My typical workday is rather hectic - attending appointments with clients, cold calling on new clients, many phone calls, all the admin involved in submitting an advert to the departments of the newspaper, chasing and receiving payments, follow up on calls and client appointments. I have learned a lot regarding the publishing of a newspaper, people, how to deal with all different types of people. One of the most challenging aspects of this job is definitely meeting new business people and then "reading" them, in order to be able to convince them to take an ad space in the newspaper. I get along well with all the colleagues that I deal with, however, there is so much "politics" involved, that it makes many of my days less than enjoyable

Pros: Great learning opportunity
Cons: Efforts not recognised, more and harder work is expected

GREAT LEARNING CURVE, BUT DAYLIGHT ROBBERY

WORKING EXTRA HOURS FOR A MINIMUM WAGE THAT YOU CANNOT EVEN LIVE ON. ONE IS EXPECTED TO GIVE A 100% KNOWING THAT THERE ARE NO REWARDS. WORKING LIKE A SLAVE IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHICH NO ONE WANTS TO BE IN. WORKING FOR A BOSS WHO IS TARGET DRIVEN BUT EMPLOYEES CONCERNS ARE SWEPT UNDER THE RUG.

Pros: no opportunity at all
Cons: work hard no rewards

Good learning curve.

A TYPICAL WORK DAY CONSISTS OF UPDATING SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITES. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. RELATIONSHIP WITH COWORKERS IS PLEASANT. I HAVE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT DIGITAL AND JOURNALISM. I ENJOY DOING MY JOB. THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECTS IS RESISTANCE TO CHANGE AND GROWTH.

Pros: GREAT LEARNING OPPORTUNITY
Cons: UNDER PAID

Tough times

Smart people in a desperate situation. Advertising comes in but it isnt nearly enough to cover the overblown print staff and the lean, under-resourced digital staff. People are therefore tense and uncertain of their futures, despite all delivering above what could usually be expected of them.

Pros: Smart, friendly collegues.
Cons: Not attracting enough income and as such feels extremely unstable in terms of future prospects.

The perfect learning place in the media industry.

Working in an open plan office has ups and downs, but getting to know fabulous people with different personalities is always great. A normal working day would start at 7am, bright and early to get things done!

Pros: Great place for growth
Cons: No Medical Aid

I enjoy people and new challenges.

I was an HR Manager at Caxton CTP for more than 10 years. The most challenging part of my portfolio was Skills Development and taking it to the next level. I enjoyed the diversity of the job and the challenges that each phase brought. I am looking forward to a new venture.

Pros: Learning and developing my skills and abilities
Cons: Long hours

Loved my job

I was an HR Manager at a division within Caxton CTP Ltd. for 10 years. I worked and aided fellow HR Managers within the Group. I am "hands on" and detail orientated. I am passionate about my job and enjoy working with people.

Pros: Great balance between work and family.
Cons: Occasionally long hours

Stepping stone

I took a salary knock starting at Caxton, with the idea that a large corporate company I could work my way up the ranks. I was promoted twice, with no monetary recompense, more work and more responsibility for the same salary.

Pros: relaxed work enviroment
Cons: low salaires, no benefits, dead end career
