Hardworking and determination results in self improvement

The company benefits are good but it is a sales company ( sales it is its core business ) not technical guys. Development is good for sales technologists not technical guys like us. As the only Instrument Tech in our branch, maintenance , installation , trouble shooting and training including system development on site for our equipment is my responsibility. Every morning service technician have a meeting were we share the challenges they face , if they cannot resolve due to training , i train them or visit the site and resolve those problem and do coaching later and technical fault finding on the plant or equipments are more exciting than building the panels because i learn a lot from them. The challenging is that there no proper training for technicians , if there's new fault or equipment technician must rely on manual or contact the supplier.

Pros: Self time management
Cons: No promotion

Good in Working with people.

I always strive for excellent when I am working with different people. I motivate and encourage people in order to reach goals and objectives of the organization. I have ability to find the strengths and weakness of each every peraon to my team. I used to provide assistance to those who have weakness particularly if that is going to impact the perfomance of the team and organization. I strongly believe in quality, as the results I ensure that quality is championed throut the product in which we produce.

Pros: Quality Co-ordinator or Manager
Cons: long working hours and overtime.

Diverse working environment

Its a total Water solutions company for all the industries. I enjoy collaborating with colleagues through the company (South Africa and rest of Africa) especially introducing Reliability Engineering to the business. Traditionally they were a Chemical providing company but now they are doing total Water Solution including MOM (Manage, Operate and Maintain) on Water treatment plants. To convince Sales people that Maintenance does not happen by itself, but it needs time and money, has been quite a challenge, and now they start seeing the light.

Pros: Great opportunity to implement the best practices in terms of plant reliability as there is none in place.
Cons: Having to convince people that some of the commission they have been making has been as a result of not utilizing the maintenance budget.

Great exposure

Lab analysis is typically a routine job but you get unfamiliar and challenging samples from time to time and also special projects which is exciting. It is interactive with both customers and colleagues so one needs to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. I have learnt to deal with any situation promptly, to be patient and work well under pressure , to provide accurate, reliable results consistently and timelously as this is the core function of the lab. Because we are a head office lab, we receive samples from all over South Africa and other African countries where we operate. The sample volumes can be quiet overwhelming but you learn to prioritise and work smart, which can be challenging when everyone requires urgency or priority on their samples.

Pros: Working with various type of watet sample I.e. Cooling Towers, boilers, effluent/wastewater, drinking water, borehole etc
Cons: Understaffed and overworked

Great company to work for

Improchem is one of the best companies to work for. I am based at head office so most issues pertaining to safety do come through to us. its very challenging at the same time exciting. The relationship between the co workers is a healthy one, sort of like a family as there are older and younger people. I have learnt a lot over the years. My only issue right now is I need to relocate back to Durban as I am struggling financially and right now the company is not in a position to give me a transfer as it's also re-structuring.

Pros: Wonderful company to work for
Cons: Need to relocate to KZN
