Investec Reviews

Strong Project Management skills

20 years PM experience in mainly the financial services and insurance industries, mostly on software development projects through the entire SDLC. I am familiar with PMBOK and Agile methodologies.

Pros: Exposure to different areas in the bank and engaging with senior stakeholders
Cons: Uncertainty around duration of project makes prediction of contract duration difficult.

Wonderful Place to Learn

My experience and time at Investec has helped me to create and build on existing relationships with clients and key stakeholders. It has helped me understand complex deals and the structures involved to make it a success. The dynamics of what makes a successful team and how to build on present successes for the journey ahead. A typical day entails me beginning early before 8 am, going through any emails that may have come through during the past evening. Addressing them and thereafter I prioritise what needs to be done for the day in order of importance and resolution requirements. I schedule meetings with clients if need be and if not I gadge from their correspondence on what is needed.

Pros: Learning and exposure is immense
Cons: Challenge is not there

Great company to work for

Investec is an excellent company to work for. Their unique culture sincerely means they take care of their people. It is a challenging environment that encourages open mindness, speak freely and challenge people’s thinking. They are not focused on hierarchy and you have freedom to talk to anyone on any level. It is limiting if you looking to climb up a traditional career ladder. It’s a company that expects you to drive your own path. It can be very clicky and everything works based on relationship building. The pay and bonus is good but they aren’t doing you a favor you have worked for it as it’s a solely performance driven company.

Pros: Good Reputational Company, collaborative environment, great physical working space, holidays off sites and parties, free stuff, free lunches suppers drinks, weekly open bar
Cons: Long hours but this is driven by you, difficult to climb up the ladder, easy to move internal options are limited

Investment, Banking and Compliance projects

I am the middleman articulating business needs to the technical development teams. I run planning sessions, facilitate the solution design sessions and I monitor and track the project throughout its lifecycles including post implementation and benefit realization. I run monthly steering committee meetings, weekly stakeholder meetings and daily development scrums. Communication and people management has been my biggest challenge, working with diverse teams including young and older developers proves to be quite complex but I have managed to modify my approach to each.

Pros: Love my job, love working on different projects and being involved with different people
Cons: The lack of a PMO structure in my company. The initial PMO was disbanded and I think that I am missing this.

Excellent learning and studying opportunities

Manual work that requires a lot of attention to prevent risk. Culture is very important for the overall organisation but does not necessarily filter through to all the departments. I currently service UK based clients which exposes me to different people than the South African market.

Pros: Great opportunity for educational bursaries
Cons: Less opportunity for growth

Great learning experience

Working as a Support Banker has been a great journey. I have learnt a lot about working with people and I have also learnt more about myself. The people I work with are like family and everyone sticks up for another and we help each other with any hiccups. No day is really the same. There’s always something different awaiting you and allowing you the chance to grow and learn from every challenge you’re faced with. The transition from being a full time student to being employed was a challenge but my work space enabled me to quickly fit and be able to work comfortably and even now with my studies, Team leaders and colleagues are very supportive and education comes first because they like seeing us grow ourselves apart from the job, which I think is really amazing.

Pros: Great place to learn a lot
Cons: Contract worker

Being a chef requires years of work experience and hard working.

I like to work in your company because the company pays a good salaries. I'd love the opportunity to work with a company that's making a difference. Finding a company with a positive work environment and values that aligned with my own has remained a priority throughout my job search and this company ranks at the top of the list. The biggest challenge that a chef faces is to make our clients happy but people are people so it's natural for them to become unhappy. And clients are always right even if there wrong.

Pros: Great opportunity for promotion is to make our clients happy, engaged and loyal.
Cons: Long hours are often common for chefs.

Excellent learning curve

Its an open culture company, in which encourages entrepreneurs to make a difference in the organization. It is a rather flat structure in which it is easy to open a discussion with co workers . It is a rather supportive attitude in which everyone operates as a team rather then individuals. I have learned that to make an impact it takes more then your job scope to make a difference. You need to own your journey and chase your ambitions . Some of the difficulties that can be faced , are being such a large organization may be a challenge on finding the correct avenues to reach your ambitions. Being a flat structure some of tour merits may not be acknowledged.

Pros: Open culture
Cons: Challenge to find growth

Good learning curve, high pressure, cut throat work environment

It has been a good learning experience, especially in terms of getting CIB experience. High pressure, cut throat, fend for yourself kind of environment.

Pros: Good experience
Cons: Very low salary

Human lead processes

and have the right people in the room. I As junior brand manager, i have learnt the importance of putting people first and prioritising work relationships. 90% of my role is managing relationships and not people, the other 10% is managing my processes. This is not to say, being organized and efficient is not important but you have to recognise the person behind the process. If there is one thing that this pandemic taught all of us is that we are human first. As a manager, a great process is nothing without having the right conversations and have the right people in the room. I thoroughly enjoy working with a team that not only trustst their capabilities but also trust me to lead them in the right direction. However, being a young manager comes with lack of experience and as a result a lack of trust. However, with right the guidance i believe skills can be taught. The most challenging part about my role are the people, however, they are the ones that push me to my greatest potential.

Pros: promoted from graduate to Junior Brand manager
Cons: Not enough exposure
