Maersk Line Reviews

Biggest container line on earth

Please note the location of work is global as the work is offshore (not Pretoria as stated above). I've been with the company since I was a cadet. The routine for navigation officers is quite standard for the container trade. Navigation officers work 2 watches a day of 4 hours each. Junior officers work 6 hour shifts in port doing cargo watches. I always experienced good relationships with co-workers. For some it can be challenging to adapt to many new cultures and nationalities, but I have no problem with this. It's actually valuable life-experience. Most of what I didn't learn as a cadet I learned on my first tour of duty as an navigation officer. I have become proficient in all matters relating to the third officer's duties. The most challenging part of the job is dealing with dangerous situations while sailing, and having them develop rapidly. This requires fast thinking and total situational awareness. A quality that all navigation officers strive for.

Pros: Experience with challenging trade routes, opportunity to train subordinates up to officer status
Cons: Stressful situations that are hard to compare to shore work, work days in port may only allow for 1 - 6 hours rest (non-work hours) a day,

Great opportunities for growth

The company provides a great platform for junior engineers as myself to express and grow themsleves with mentors availble throughout to assist. During the time I have gained much needed learning and knowledge to become a competent engineer.

Pros: Great opportunities for learning
Cons: On job stay.
