A typical working day involves advice to sites regarding labour matters, arranging training courses and learnerships, advising on development strategy and plans in relation to BBBEE, ensuring salary and wage information is gatherer before monthly deadlines, recruitment of staff, recruitment and management of bursary students, including payment of tuition, residence and books, monitoring academic progress, placement on site for practical experience, etc., managing the BBBEE scorecard and annual audit, leadership and career development through succession planning and performance and development discussions. Construction is quite rough and ready with no pretentions while healthcare is more sophisticated but softer and possibly more caring. However, working with people, the challenges remain largely the same - ensuring fairness, meeting needs and expectations about each employee's well being, development needs, reward, etc.

Pros: In construction, the work is hands on and the work is outdoors. There are few airs and graces and generally you know where you stand.
Cons: When labour problems are experienced on site, people are vulnerable because they are exposed and little protection can be expected from police.

Great learning curve

I was responsible for managing and supervising sub-contractors doing gabion works, stone pitching and concrete works (minor and major structures). I was responsible for putting together their work programme and procurement of material. What I learnt from this is that it is very important to have a good relation with your colleagues regardless of age, race and position in the company. I enjoy working with people and I work well individually or as part of group. The most challenging aspects of this job was dealing with people from different backgrounds and having to make sure that everyone meets their daily target work wise.

Cons: Long working hours
