It is an interesting field working with scientists
Scientists are highly qualified and knowledgable. Passionate about the work they do. The difficulty is in getting them to understand the importance of breaking down their language for the understanding of the ordinary man. This has been the challenging aspect of the job. Scientists live in their own world. A typical day is about meetings, offering a strategic overview and support to my team and colleagues. I have a great working relationship with my colleagues, who now understanding what the function of the directorate is all about and how it fits in the value chain. I enjoy talking to my colleagues and giving advise on how and when to communicate, assisting them in preparing for interviews and managing their projects.
Pros: There is no room for promotion since this is seen as a support function that can only go as far as director level.
Cons: Long working hours are the name of the game, traveling and preparing CEO and board reports

Great learning experience
My typical day involves strategic planning for executing plans with my team, checking on those based in other provinces, meetings with other divisional heads and other stakeholders, writing reports for CEO, EXCO and Board and attending to Ministerial events. I have a great relationship with my colleagues based in all 7 provinces and my team spread all over these provinces. I have learnt to be patient and a good listener since my organisation has employees from lowest levels to the highest and my work requires that I work with everyone, which I enjoy doing. I enjoy working with people especially in projects and getting my team to think, creating a platform for my team to be creative, assert themselves and seeing growth in them. The most challenging aspect has been getting the scientists to talk more about the work they do and getting them to simplify science for ordinary human beings.
Pros: Understanding Biodiversity
Cons: No growth opportunities

SANBI has been a good place to start a career after university
A typical work day at SANBI is unfortunately not typical. Working in the mainstreaming work while supporting project management is always changing. Mondays and Fridays are the busiest days for me because I need to start my week right to ensure I am productive and Fridays, I wrap up and try my best to not carry-over tasks.
Pros: Junior staff are given some chances to lead certain projects.
Cons: Travel does get overwhelming when the cheapest option to travel is selected.

Great job but challenges with management relations
tThe job on its own is a good job, except the relations with superior s are quite challanging and it has been quite difficult to correct them which has lead to demotivation pf staff and loss of interest on the job sometimes.
Pros: Growth that comes with being independent on the job
Cons: Not much support

Excellent learning curve
I worked at a school for 11yrs and moved to Biodiversity Education and Empowerment as a Manager for 10yrs. Due to illhealth I resigned from my position in September 2018. I am a people's person, I work well with a team. I am able to work under pressure and able to prioritise. I enjoy working with learners, educators and community members as my job required me to do so. My challenge was when we had lots and lots of school bookings and we were undercapacitated. I would secrifise my tea and lunch time so as to work throughout the day, by the time I finish, I am hungry and exhausted, but I still enjoyed the work I was doing.
Pros: Great opportunity for promotion
Cons: Long working hours
