Making a difference

On a typical working day I can perform 3 functions within the SCM chain, inventory (receiving and issuing of stock), request quotations and evaluation of quotations. A day does not go by that I do not handle queries from both cost centres and suppliers. Supply Chain Management is a chain process and it is important to have a good working relationship with my co-workers as one can not purchase alone. We quality check each others work because mistakes in our field have financial implications. I have learned to be tolerant, patient and to listen before I respond. Some issues that develop in my environment due to the pressure are mostly blown out of proportion by failing to listen properly.

Pros: Working and interacting with different people from diverse cultures and the opportunity to impact the lives of the poorest in our country
Cons: We never have enough budget

Public Service and customer services

As a social development department we deal directly with the communities and here at their worst. We deal mostly with people who are from poor needy background. We are the face of poverty eradication of the sitting governments of South Africa thus are under scrutiny at all times. This where you learn to responsible for all your actions and take whatever challenges on the chin. We work from 7:30 to 16:00 where we deal mainly with grant applications and putting them into payment. I have learnt to work cordially with my fellow workers as our line of work demands that we do it in a value chain format. I have learnt to be my own leader and be essential service provider in a sense of the word Working with people Dealing with difficult people who do not want to listen.

Pros: It is good as you would like to see your work recognized and we get feed back from our customers even when we walk in the malls. Even those you no longer know or recognize they still know you and that is is a sense of fulfilment.
Cons: Turning back a client that is very hungry because they have no right documents is the biggest challenge.

A challenging environment with all the down falls of the Public Sector

The working environment is very challenging with the politic taking often the precedent on any other preoccupation. The environment is very noisy and sometime unhygienic. The relation with the fellow workers can be challenging especially when it comes to the way minorities are treated. How ever it is a very rich environment where you meet lots of very nice fellow workers. The work is very interesting and considering the difficulty of head office to deliver clear guide lines, the ground has a lot of latitude for developing and testing new solution. That is quite q great advantage. Lots of opportunity are also offered in term of training and development The most challenging and frustrating thing in I.T. is the refusal for head office to recognize the value and the inputs of people that works in the region

Pros: Interesting work with a great sens of helping the development of the country
Cons: Politic interference and lack of accountability at all level

It is a people based department and we provide poverty eradicating relief

I manually and system screen potential grant recipients that come to visit our office. I also interview them and advice them about the documents needed to apply for the type of grant they would like to apply for. I also help with then taking their application down which includes opening of their files. We use a value chain system which is dubbed four step module which means one file will go through four hands before it is finalized and the grant put into payment. We then have to related well which each other to make it possible. I have learnt very intensive way of people management, system working Dealing with difficult customers

Pros: Great level of learning to work with people
Cons: It can be exhausting

Gaining knowledge and experience

At the beginning it was challenging, but as you get used to the work it becomes monotonous. Dealing with different personalities. Learn to deal with different personalities and people with different moods that deal with situations differently. A typical work day. I work from 7:30 to 16h00. Sometimes I have to work more hours. No overtime paid or day offs given. Learned a lot Enjoy the people I work with. At times some people are rude, there is no respect given and some people lack communication skills at work.

Pros: Learning a lot and broadening my knowledge.
Cons: Sometimes things are not properly organised and communicated.

Reaching out to the less fortunate

My life @ sassa begins at 7:30 Monday to Friday including some Saturdays. Being part of this company has helped me to see different people's social live's in this country like never before and to get first hand experience of what it means to be poor or to be in a situation where none cannot provide for themselves. A healthy working relationship with my co-workers is fundamental as our unit is a chain process,we need each other in order to get the job done so I would say it was good but at times challenging...what I enjoyed most working for sassa is to end my day knowing that I have made a difference in someone's life. Coming to realise that social assistance is starting to do more harm to our society than good😔it is breeding a generation of laziness, greed and dependency, lack of interest in our society and youngsters.

Pros: you get to make a difference into someone's life
Cons: you are over worked, always told you're not doing enough during performance reviews
