Telkom SA SOC Ltd. is a wireline and wireless telecommunications provider in South Africa, and operating in more than 38 countries across the African continent. Telkom is a semi-privatised, 39% state-owned company. Despite the typical day for a system administrator sounding mundane it is an essential role and one where you always need to be prepared for a crisis. Your day will usually include being able to balance your routine maintenance tasks with diagnosing problems reported by your network users. The system administrator will also have to bear in mind when new employees join the company – they are responsible for assigning the new hire’s network and database privileges and setting up their login. The last task of the working day usually is to set up database backups, which will run overnight. If any issues occur with these backups the system administrator will learn about it through calls from network users in the morning, who are unable to access their required database.

Pros: Simply put, spending additional time in the office can help you keep on top of your workload. Falling behind can happen even if you simply take a day off. And even the best employee scheduling software won't always help you and your team get everything done in 40 hours a week. Sometimes overtime becomes necessary, and you may even find that putting in overtime during the off hours can oftentimes result in reduced distractions and heightened efficiency when everyone else has gone home for the night.
Cons: Overtime is often the best way to impress management and show your dedication to ensuring a project is delivered in a timely fashion. This type of dedication can result in a wealth of benefits in the long run, ranging from promotions to increased wages. Occasional overtime can be necessary for ensuring you have a long-term career that will evolve into something high paying and low stress.
