A great place to work in whether you are looking for growth or a place to retire from
I enjoy working at the particular school I am in now (Chemical & Metallurgical Engineering). I find that the Head of School believes in respecting the employees and therefore has instilled this in other staff members. The majority of staff members, both academic and support are therefore respectful of each other. I like the fact that I can plan my tasks and most of the time I am able to work according to these plans. Co-workers are also respectful of one another and co-operate when I send requests for tasks to be performed. I mostly enjoy the liberty to plan and execute my work schedules and being able to make decisions about the department I am heading. The challenges are some, usually elderly staff members, who are against any changes to the procedures. Otherwise overall I am truly happy in my job and working for the university.
Pros: Great opportunities for growth.
Cons: The worst medical aid plan I have ever come across

Good experience
It was fun and refreshing to the work at my university because I got to explore the university in a different context other than being a student. The work was not difficult it was straight forward and student friendly such as marking undergraduate students' tutorials and monitoring students during exams and tests. I related to the work on personal level because I was also a student and the exams/tests I invigilated I have also written them during my undergraduate years. The timing was inconvenient sometimes because they required me to do work during busy times such as exams. I had to work six hours per work which was a bit streneous because I was in my final year of study which means I was very busy therefore there was a clash. Overall it was a great experience and it was empowering
Pros: It just gave me work experience and I got to farmiliarize myself with the work academics do.
Cons: Required me to sacrifice my study time.

Project administrator/ business analyst/Data ware housing
I love the environment that I work in. It is unfortunate that the internship does not mean permanent employment. I came into the company a fresh graduate but I have learned a lot. Because we are a small company, it feels like working with friends. We work as a team and cover for each and help each other out. If I have task and I am not sure how to carry it out my co-workers were always there to help. We did project management for a software company who was a client of ours. That was a huge learning curve as I worked as project administrator and business analyst. Doing the software for an asset management company was also a bonus as I have a keen interest in finance and investments.
Pros: great learning curve for me.
Cons: the job was not permanent

My mixed bag of experience and skills will make an excellent addition to your team.
I am your ideal candidate because I tick all the boxes of requirements. As a skilled and experienced project manager, I am also an excellent communicator and team player. I’m well-travelled and very independent, and I celebrate diversity because the world would be a very boring place without it. As such, I have the ability to find ways to connect with different people in different scenarios and contexts. I understand the higher educational landscape in South Africa, and I’m immersed in the Wits community. With my background in client liaison, publishing, managing websites, marketing, writing, editing, proofing, research, planning and project management, I’m convinced that my experience and skills will complement your team.
Pros: Strong project management skills; attention to detail; perfectionist; critical thinker; growth mindset; heutagogist
Cons: Will never give up learning

Great if you are studying as it is close and convenient. Low pay
Work typically involves a session of supervision of 15- 30 students where certain work must be completed and certain concepts must be understood. It can be very fast paced and difficult as different students have different learning curves. Teaching assistants sometimes need to work together but most of the time they keep to themselves unless one is in need of help. I have seen how different people learn and have enjoyed opening people’s minds to new ideas and concepts. The biggest challenge is ensuring that every student understands the necessary concepts but is also managing their workload and stresses of student life. Another challenge is marking students and giving them feedback on their understanding of older concepts while not distracting them from the new content they need to grasp. Remembering where each student went wrong can be difficult to tackle, given the fast pace of the teaching sessions. It is rewarding seeing students improve their critical thinking skills and how they express themselves.
Pros: Enjoyable to teach
Cons: Income

I am happy with my current job but little worried on the future of higher education institutions
In my current job, I got number of opportunities to work in different areas from dimensional modeling, ETL implementation, reporting infrastructure setup, servers configurations and customer support and training. I worked in an excellent team and none of the datamarts we developed was a failure. Over the past 12 years, I was promoted in different roles and I enjoyed each of the role that I worked at WITS. In my current role of data architect and team leader capacity, I managed to keep the team to work together and delivered projects from complex ETL implementation to reporting tools upgrade and migration. The most challenging aspect of the job is the HR side, to keep the smart people together and keep their energies on the right direction.
Pros: At WITS there are number of areas that still require development and there are great opportunities to work on the new projects we are busy on machine learning.
Cons: Fees must fall is hitting the universities and we don't know if universities in future will have enough budget to run the new IT/infrastructure upgrade projects.

Moderate working environment
Academia is nothing other than teaching and learning. There is battle of ideas. A typical work day ranges from delivering a lecture and running administrative issues of the course. Academics rarely work in groups except in research projects. I have learned working under pressure and good working relations with heads of school, coordinators and administrators. I enjoy interacting with students and learning from them. The most challenging aspect of the job is assessing if students actually know what you have taught them.
Pros: many opportunities
Cons: flexibility

Wonderful learning and growth opportunity
My stay at the University of Witwatersrand as a student has been a rather challenging one, but one thing I can say with certainty is that these were the best years of my life. Any student knows that university is one of the most difficult phases of anyone's life. However, what excited me about it was the opportunity to explore my mind, discovering what I am good at and what I enjoy most and developing my skills while meeting the most interesting people. I also enjoyed the feeling of having control over my life and being free to make whatever moves I felt would benefit my career the most. While at times the variety of these choices felt very crippling, it is still by far the best thing I loved about being at Wits. The lecturers were amongst the friendliest people I'd met in my life with just very few exceptions whom we learnt to live in harmony with irrespective of their personalities. From them we learnt the values of dealing with people , which ultimately worked out for the best?
Pros: Great working environment with lots of opportunities
Cons: One can easily get carried away in such an environment

Established professional relationships
I was essentially my own boss. I was given objectives by my supervisor and my role was to ensure that those were met within allocated time. My co-workers were supportive and provided excellent guidance. furthermore I was always there to assist in the event that they required my help. I'd teach them a skill that I had learnt. To work with a given time line and furthermore to plan my tasks accordingly ahead of time. When dealing with biological samples the most challenging events were trying to optimize the conditions to ensure favorable growth. furthermore keeping myself motivated as I had to perform the tasks independently
Pros: flexible, fun, dynamic
Cons: long hours
