York Timbers Reviews

Excellent learning curve

A typical day at work consists of bickering colleagues taking credit for other's work. My relationship with co-workers in the same job title is excellent, but struggle to form a good relationship with those with higher qualifications, because they feel intimidated when I whom is semi skilled knows a quicker and cheaper way to fix a machine. I have learned a lot, to much you can possibly categorize; maintenance, fitting en turner, forklift driving, breakdown attendance, safety, construction, house keeping, etc. I enjoy having my own section to maintain, because no one can come and do something to frame me with, which is common in the work place, because like I mentioned, people feel intimidated and threatened by younger workers willing to put in the effort, thus including the fact why it is the most challenging aspect of the job, keeping good relation with more experienced co-workers.

Pros: Great experience
Cons: No workplace equity

Good opportunity for someone with passion on forestry

Working at York is a great opportunity.you get to learn a lot of things within the environment. What i enjoyed most is that i was given a chance to learn about everything in the company.the supervisors are great and very understanding including the management. What I don't like about the company is their salary towards the employees and company benefits.the only thing you will benefit from York is knowledge on timbers, beside knowledge there is nothing.long working hours is guaranteed and low rate per hour and leave days are not required accordingly.

Pros: Great opportunity for promotion
Cons: Long working hours

Good environment for learning technical and instrumentation

Good working environment where you learn technical stuff everyday and instrumentation stuff, daily challenges as learning new skills as per breakdown and fault finding procedures, I've learnt alot including to never give up on any challenge and learning how to be a responsible Artisan, sharing and teaching coworkers and semi skilled about some technical skills and ways to approach a fault finding procedures. And most challenging times was when we were facing problems with PLC fault as by then I had to a technician to perform such fault findings on the PLC though I am just a mere Electrician.

Pros: Great opportunity for learning technical skills
Cons: Working 9 hours a day

Colour bias on pay

Relaxed work pressure,. No bonuses, colour enclined (skin color). Under paid blacks. No growth opportunities. Management get bonuses, contracts are very shaddy, color skin staff must do work for other and can't refuse to assist or will get into trouble. Sometimes can work on weekends at no pay (not clearly stated 8n contract). Terrible communication from management.

Pros: Good experience exposure
Cons: More responsilities, no increase at all

Valuable site exposure and lessons in management.

I received a great work opportunity when accepting a job offer from York Timbers. Almost immediately I was tasked to balance a maintenance team and civil engineering responsibilities. I chose to build relationships based on trust and respect. In turn, I believe I successfully earned the trust and respect from colleagues. In my time with York Timbers, I have learnt that a well thought out plan can go a long way. Having said that, I also learnt that it is important to be adaptable. I have gained experience in various fields of engineering, and have also been fortunate enough to manage a maintenance team of which I have also learnt a great deal from.

Pros: Opportunity to manage a team while being exposed to site work.
Cons: Long working hours
