Excellent Learning Curve

My daily job entails operations, finance Human Resources management as well as business development - stakeholder build up. This job has been a good learning curve to me with regard to my relationship with my principals, fellow managers and subordinates and has enhanced my people's skills. I enjoy seeing the fruits of my toils, which includes technology development, demonstration and implementation, come to realization. I also get fulfilment from making a difference in my colleagues lives in terms of helping them achieve their fullest potential as innovative scientists and engineers. What challenges me about this job is having to build relationship with external clients. I get to meet different people with a completely different way of thinking and goals. I have to think creatively to bring their world to my world or take my world to theirs. This challenges have helped me to think out of the box and has equipped me with the ability to adapt into different environments with ease.

Pros: Equipped me with lots of managerial experience and the ability to think creatively
Cons: The financial model of this organization, which is a driving factor for sustainability, somehow makes it difficult for managers to fully spread their wings.

Team work and hard work is the core

Working at the CSIR has been eye opening. What is more important is to always have new ideas and to be innovative as everything is about research. The most challenging part of my work is to try new things throughout the year and realize later that you do not have anything solid to produce. Working with the great and hardworking team is the most crucial part for our projects. If one is lacking then they will be unnecessary delays

Pros: Getting to try new things and it finally works out
Cons: Not getting funding for your project and they close it

Great learning curve

- A typical workday is spending time on your research for academic purposes or publication in Journal articles or directing your time towards a specific main projection that requires a team of engineers. - Co-workers are encouraging and offer support when needed. - What I learnt is that I prefer researching topics that are of interest to me and these make the work more satisfying. - I enjoyed discovering myself and what type of work I would prefer to do in the industry or research institution. - The challenging aspects is staying ontop of your game and meeting deadlines.

Pros: Offer excellent advantages on discovering yourself and which field you fall into.
Cons: Taking work to home and long hours on researching.

Career growth

I Nokubonga Siphesihle Ngobese, currently work as a Regional Training and Development Coordinator at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under the Strategic Initiatives Implementation Unit. Some of my responsibilities includes coordinating large or small scale training courses in Energy Management Systems (EnMS) and Energy Systems Optimisation (ESO) that were developed in partnership with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). I have 4 years’ experience as a Candidate Researcher and have gained the skills required for health and safety in the mining industry. The projects that I was involved in contributed to my hazard identification and risk assessment skills on occupational health. I am a self-motivated, hardworking individual with over 3 years’ experience in training and development.

Pros: Learning opportunities
Cons: Learning opportunities

No real growth potential

The CSIR is a typical research and development environment. Good exposure to certain aspects but not enough accountability at the various levels of management. It is also very much lacking a good HR department that truly cares about the growth potential of their employees. Salary increases are almost below inflation and no bonuses for the last 3 years or any alternative incentive schemes. You have to pretty much create your own opportunities. What I have also found though is that some units have such poor managers who have inherited their jobs over their long tenures at the company. However, they disregard employees that report misconduct of other employees and whip the ones who actually do the work harder. As a result, morale is extremely low.

Pros: none
Cons: poor management
