A complete HR/IR package

Telephone discussions with my site-based HR officials start a day for me. Advising line managers on work permit issues, discipline topics, organised labour and research report for tender submissions, is involved in a typical day.

Pros: challenging and learning new things about other companies and countries (when researching for tenders)
Cons: Travelling to the various sites

A complete HR/IR package in a short space of time

A very interesting role indeed and fairly involved in the day to day operations. Conference calls with my team in Zambia and other sites in one minute, interviews in the next, and discussing possible retrenchments etc in the same day. Very difficult principals who do not believe, that they are not in control of everything every where. However, the experience I am getting here is so vast and others need a life time to experience what I have experienced in 8 years.

Pros: I have been promoted twice in my 8 years, but i feel a ceiling now.
Cons: Too much travelling to sites

Complete HR in a fast-changing world

80% of HR in contract mining is employment relations and it is very interesting to interact with employees on the shop floor. As a manager, it is fulfilling to take time and chat with the lowest ranking employee and hear how he feels about his job and the company. I have learned that employees are not as stubborn as they are said to be, when approached the right way. Most challenging in getting employment permits to work in Zambia.

Pros: Experience in all the disciplines of HR (ER, benefits, recruitment, transformation, administration, etc)
Cons: Travelling to the various sites
