Learnt a new skill in master data
Vert tight deadlines, no real trust and too much red tape. Decisions and strategy take forever. Skeleton teams and bureaucracy make delivery difficult. Great people but poor leadership. A fantastic environment to learn how not do things. I learned a new discipline in proper master data that was great. My role scope increased and covered more that pm work, practically ran the department. Managed the department budget and contracts but have no doa nor signing power on spend. Manages external software provider
Pros: Great people to work with and good learning curve
Cons: Lack of leadership and too much red tape and change in leadership...too many acting positions.

From a Junior buyer to a Procument Manager in 10 years.
I'm an Acting Procurement Manager at Transnet Property. On a typical day I start at 06h30 checking on what was left undone the day before. From then I carry on with needs to be done for the day, like checking on the project progress and attending to meetings. I currently have a staff complement of 5 people reporting directly to me. 3 do the Operational works (OPEX) and the 2 are responsible for all the capital projects (CAPEX). The daily challenges of good reporting, meeting timelines and different characters are some of my learning experiences I had. I really enjoy the different dynamics brought by each project I deal with. Also the different individual characters bring out the best in how each day will pen out. Some of the best days are when I have to travel for site visits as well as for project handovers. I get that sense of satisfaction from seeing the projects I started having been completed.
Pros: I'm currently acting and hope to be appointed asap.
Cons: The scrutiny that is put on Procurement can sometimes be overwhelming.

Good opportunities
Time management is important as we work closely with customers. I set example to my sub-ordinates by becoming reliable, available, and always on time. Relationship between myself and co-workers is good as they report any challenges, innovations, and progress in time and so do I to them and senior management. I have learnt a lot in terms of communication, leadership, logistics, reporting skills to mention few but not limited. Most challenging is to report to customers not reasons of not reaching the target as requested.
Pros: Oppotunities of promotion are available.
Cons: Working longer hours and on weekend

Transnet is a company that is slowly moving forward. It is however constrained by state owned entity politics. There are opportunities for excellence but the pace is slow.
