Defence and Aerospace manufacturing sector

I am a Strategic sourcing and contracts specialist within the defence and aerospace manufacturing sector. I interact with high technology manufacturers and suppliers globally and locally on a daily basis. It is my responsibility to source new technology products and alternative suppliers to become competitive and efficient in the manufacturing of high tech products. I am involved with supplier transformation and governance in terms of BBBEE and PPPFA Act. I negotiate contractual terms and conditions with suppliers and manufacturers. I am responsible for commercial public tender management from inception until awarding of contracts. I work with a team of four individuals. I enjoy adding value to the procurement function by negotiating the best deals for the company. The challenges I experience is the limited availability of local suppliers for high tech products in the Aerospace industry. It is difficult to find BBBEE companies that are involved with Radar, Laser and Electro Optics in South Africa. I

I am Burgersfort’s resident and self-motivated hardworking Fitter and Turner with strong Maintenance, manufacturing and power generation experience and have an advanced working knowledge of all technical components. I have first class analytical, fault finding skills, machining, materials ordering and receiving, reading and interpretation of specifications and drawings. I'm able to perform in challenging environments and under pressure with minimum or no supervision also reliable, trustworthy and have proven leadership qualities. I am a strong teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills, strong technical problem solving skills and willing to learn. Do any other job related functions when required. I maintain a health and safety standards at all times.

My personal work experience at Denel Dynamics SOC

I source and procure high-tech and high value commodities, services and products for missile manufacturing from across the globe. I manage the all open public tender process for Denel Dynamics. My responsibilities include: Supplier Relationship management, Contracts Negotiations and management and Strategic sourcing for complex items eg. Telemetry stations. I enjoy working with teams of highly qualified professionals on a daily basis. I attend regular product design review and production costing meetings. I have vast knowledge of local as well as International suppliers. I was the Supply Chain Manager for an Austrian electronics systems integration house in Pretoria. I am well known within the Electronics, Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, Optronic sectors locally and abroad. I enjoy sourcing obsolete and new technology requirements for development purposes. I make valuable contributions towards decision making processes. I enjoy an unblemished career through honesty, strong ethics and good moral values

Pros: Tere is great potential for growth within the Aerospace and Defence Industry
Cons: Due to the defence budget cuts, the demand for local defence and aerospace equipment and products is decreasing thereby creating uncertainty about the sustainability of the company long term into the future

Opportunities for exposure and experience is availble to explore and enhance skills

Working at Denel Dynamics is very interesting and challenging in terms of the high technology products and equipment that is manufactured for the aerospace and defence industry. I enjoy working with highly skilled and experienced professionals such as Engineers, Scientists, Project Managers and Technicians alike. I have gained extensive knowledge about the stringent tolerances required for manufactured goods in the aerospace industry. I enjoy interacting with suppliers and sourcing alternative products and solutions to reduce manufacturing costs and increase profitability. I pride myself for being a strong negotiator with excellent verbal and written communication skills. I enjoy sourcing products and solutions from across the globe which enhances my knowledge and keeps me updated with the latest market trends that are available worldwide..

Pros: Denel Dynamics is a good company to develop technical skills and knowledge about science and technology in defence and aerospace manufacturing
Cons: Being a State Owned Company there is limited scope for advancement and progression which takes longer than corporate private companies

Exposure to high advance technology and government procurement legislations

I manage a team of 5 Senior Buyers, a driver and an secretary. Denel Dynamics has one of the largest pool of technical skills in South Africa. We have electronic Engineers, mechanical Engineers , Software and hardware engineers as well as technicians and artisans working on a permanent contract basis. Our staff compliment comprises of approximately 800 employees. We have a division in Stellenbosch and one in Dubai UAE. I manage the Strategic Sourcing, Contracts and Procurement activities of high value and complex requirements. In addition to electronics and mechanical manufacturing I have managed building construction and renovation projects within the company. I am responsible for all Open public Tenders exceeding R500,000 in value form inception to awarding on contracts.. I am considered to be a seasoned procurement professional who has been certified as a Procurement Expert with University of Pretoria in 2012.

Cons: State Owned company - reduced defence budget affects growth and prospects for career advancements - promotions take too long

Extremely fascinating technoligies with highly skilled workforce in areospace and defence

I have enjoyed working with some of the country’s top scientists, engineers and technicians in the missiles manufacturing division. Everyone had a passion for science and technology and there was good teamwork and coo cooperation among everyone. It’s a great pity that South African government has decided not to revive this ailing SOE which has been financially cash strapped due to the ANC government leaders looting through state capture. Sadly, more than 400 employees have left the company and many of those that are still employed at Denel are not receiving payment of their salaries. Its such a great loss of such extensive knowledge, skills and expertise for South Africa but An enormous gain to Dubai and UAE. South Africa has lost the most important and critical defence capability that Denel Dynamics has accumulated throughout many decades. South Africas loss is UAE’s gain

Exposure to new technologies

I have in excess of 25 years of active Procurement and Supply Chain experience within the manufacturing arena. I pride myself for being honest, hard working, consistent and professional. I am a quick learner and I enjoy working with =in a team as well as on my own. I take responsibility and accountability for my actions. I take pride in negotiating the best deals to benefit my employer at all times.

Pros: Very good exposure to advanced technologies and systems
Cons: Being a State Owned Company, promotions and advancements are slower than that of corporate companies

Very Professional company with bad political influence

I loved working for Denel group because I was respected for my many years of professional experience. Denel is a great company with good potential however the stae capture saga has resulted in me not receiving a salary on time has prompted me to quit working there in order to save my house and pay for my two daughters university education.

Pros: Excellent company without state capture which was led by the ANC leader former president Jacob Zuma and his ANC cronies
Cons: Very politically influenced organisation
