Interesting new concepts

I have extensive experience in the Insurance industry. When I was retrenched I started my own venture which unfortunately, after 2 tears, did not pick up. I then joined this company as a consultant when they were tendering for one of the big municipal tenders. The work included financial modelling to fund the municipality in buying the material they were going to use in all households. This was more in line with the work I was doing in insurance since it involved lots of calculations/assumption in order to come up with a reasonable proposal. Unfortunately we did not get the tender. I then stayed on and had to assist in the mainstream work that the company does for survival, i.e. construction. I started as a site clerk in one of the projects they had in the Western Cape. Most recently I act as a Contracts Manager and see to it if all operations, both on site and off site, are running in an orderly fashion.

Cons: Not getting an opportunity to study a relevant course

Exposure to the construction industry

As the construction manager, on a typical day, I am on construction site doing all the paper work i.e. ordering material, keeping track of payments. Making sure that site administrators are capturing workers hours correctly. On a weekly basis checking all those hours and preparing to have them ready for every employee by month end. Making sure that all processes are followed when quoting, ordering and making payments. I have a good relationship with everyone on site including the labourers. I have learnt new things on a daily basis since this is a new industry for me. I have enjoyed the fact that this job is mainly outdoors....I was always working indoors confined to the office. The most challenging aspects of the job are dealing with labourers and sometimes suppliers
