Society For Family Health Reviews

Excellent learning experience

Society for family health is an NGO which runs a project called Newstart which deals with combination prevention (STI & TB screening, HIV counseling and testing and referring to the needs of each client). We work with people on a daily basis and are target driven, we do mobile set ups and homebased setups. I have a healthy working relationship with my coworkers because of person that I am and the team work to reach all our company goals. I have learned to be a team player and to have patience with those I meet and work with. I enjoy helping those with the lack of knowledge about HIV and assisting everyone around me from the office all the way to the field. I was mentored by a strong counsellor and met one guy that is now like a brother to me, my coworkers are like family to me. Dealing with different characters is challenging and working on Saturdays. All in all I've learned a lot and I'm looking forward to growing elsewhere and rooting down myself

Pros: Get to work with people on a day-to-day basis
Cons: Working on Saturdays

Learning

I take my work with pride and passion all the time, growing in fleet environment is what I am working on. At the month end you have to send the reports to the senior managers and you have to make sure that you meet the deadline, that the typical work day for in my work environment. I'm most enjoy the challenges that I come cross in work fleet environment and to me it comes as learning a lot. working with person who is not committed to his work is not easy at all, but you need to find a way of dealing with that person.

Pros: promosion
Cons: work long hours

Its very good being a counsellor because you get to communicate with people a lot

Working for SFH has been quite an experience, I am working in the department which I think is the most challenging department, reaching targets is difficult and you hardly get time off because you work tirelessly until the evening sometimes without getting any overtime pay, HR is in JHB so if your site is in KZN and you happen to be victimised by a colleague you have to grin and bear it because HR will not attend to you grievances , you learn to work in a fast paced environment and learn valueable skills in the field like mobilising the community when they are campaigns, but all in all working for an NGO is so difficult because of the job security, you never know what is going to happen, you may be employed today, and the next day its over, you're unemployed, you have to be constantly looking for a job. If you're not worried about numbers you're worried about your job, there is never a day to relax, its highly stressfull

Pros: You learn so much about people, about life and you're stronger and basically you can survive anything if you've survived working here.
Cons: Working for long hours without any remuneration for extra hours, you get the sense that HQ does not care about the challenges of the people at the ground level, but if something happen to their assets they will take action, if you're being abused by a fellow colleague they are silent even after reporting the issue.

Lesson learned

I work 8 hours a day, and I don't work on weekends and holidays. I have good relationship with my colleagues including my staff member. I have learn to associates with different people including their culture. I have learn to help other people regardless of whatever situation that they are facing since I am working with community. I enjoy being out there helping people, teach them about health and how do they need to communicate with our new generations. the most challenging aspects is that you meet different people with different situation and other situation its beyond our control that we can offer help.

Pros: To explore
Cons: working overtime and not getting paid of it.

Adaptability

A typical work day is quite all inclusive, it may include payroll, section 189 consultations, IR, general HR queries, committee meetings, etc. I have a good relationship with colleagues am able to forge good relationships and in turn am able to get information and assistance i require. I have learnt that i am able to adapt quite easily to change and challenges. I enjoy the flexibility in working hours and working from home and the relationships i have built. What i find challenging is the fact finances are dependent on donor funding therefore there is constant restructuring.

Pros: Flexible working hours
Cons: Retrenchments

Poor planning resulting in working under a lot of pressure

The environment at SFH is very calm and the core workers are easy going. I like to work in SFH although is some days it becomes very hectic due to the budget which closes without giving enough notices to the staff, we have to work under a lot of pressure to ensure that we commit and disburse the funds at the same time ensuring that correct processes are being followed.

Pros: Work life balance
Cons: Work under a lot of pressure
