The Presidency Reviews

Excellent learning curve

Working in the Presidency has been a big learning curve, the working environment can be very pressured at times and one is required to work long hours. The Presidency has many warm people that are always prepared to help and offer pearls of wisdom (for personal use and professionally). One is exposed to many high profile people .Of the high profile people I have met ,I have learnt humility ,as they are very humble people who have vowed to serve the public service whole heartedly. My supervisor is responsible in part for the image of the Deputy President and his office, I enjoy having an input in giving the public a positive view of the Principal ,through assisting my supervisor communicate to the public about the Principals programmes, what they entail, how much progress has been made in each of them. The travelling can prove a little strenuous at times ,but it is a necessary part of the job.

Pros: i have learnt about how government works,i get to see government at work on a daily basis
Cons: long working hours but few opportunities for growth(organograms keep shrinking

My work,My first priority.

it is very nice and challenging working in the Department as it is a national department and people are looking up to us and also the employer. I enjoy my work everyday ,providing service to my internal clients(colleagues) and making sure that they are satisfied. the relationship between me and my colleagues is excellent. I have learnt that as a public cadre people always come first and in everyday of my work I have to practice all batho pele principles. Working closely with people and helping or providing them the best service always having to deliver service to many people at the same time and to make sure that there is someone in the office always even on lunch time.

Pros: having a free clinic in the Depatment
Cons: to always sacrifice to reach some goals.

Advanced microsoft wORD,excel,powerpoInt and Outlook

-I am exposed to work under pressure and this experience has taught me to prioritise and focus on completing my work. I also have build a strong relationship with my co workers regardless of their position I always treat people with respect. Most importantly about supply chain management is know the policies and procedures to execute your work properly. This serves as the guidance to my work ethics. I enjoy interacting with suppliers and establishing strong professional relationship as to know which supplier can deliver in times of crisis. The most challenging part is the non- compliance of the end-users and demand to receive their service or product without following the right procedure but because m guided by transcript I have a strategy to respond to such issues.

Pros: Bet experience in the world
Cons: No opportunity for growth

Working relationship at The Presidency

I am currently an Intern at THE PRESIDENCY (Corporate Support Services- Procurement) in Cape Town; I am responsible for facilitating the processes to obtain operating equipment for residences, Compiling procurement requests, initiating procurement processes, obtaining quotes and performing general administration duties. To work in The Presidency as a Procurement Intern is a great privilege as it is a highest office in the land; you get an opportunity to build relationships with end users, service providers and supply chain team as a whole. It is a challenging field full of opportunities to grow.

Pros: Opportunity for growth
Cons: Too little time to execute all tasks

Excellent learning Experience

I worked as a secretary to the Adviser. He is a man of honor, integrity, accountable and reliable. He was just not a leader but a great mentor too. Working with him has taught me to be persistent and break all shackles when it seems impossible to achieve a certain objective. He has sparked my interest in reading and showing interest in the issues of the world at large. It was not all roses. The was great pressure and we had to constantly think on our toes because we would plan for something and the plans would change drastically within a slip of a second.

Pros: flexible working hours
Cons: lack of growth

Risk tolerance and Management

The intentionality of Public Sector Management when it functions as it should is for the benefit of all citizens. However, in some instances, the actuality of public Sector management delivers unintended results. This is particularly because Risk taking is virtually unthinkable within the public sector. Management in the public sector is not encouraged and is totally risk aversive to any degree of risk-taking. As a result, you will find that entrepreneurship and innovation are lacking within the management cadre. This inevitably translates into riding the tried and tested decision making way, little chance of adopting or implementing either processes, systems, and technology that may move the organization forward at a more rapid pace and with greater efficiency. This kind of management can sometimes have consequences that adversely affect the public and the impact of public good and definitely minimize the impact of strategy and service delivery.

Pros: opportunity to work across multiple functional areas
Cons: lack of growth opportunities and highly sluggish and politicised environment
