Allan Gray Reviews

Excellent platform which brought out the best in me

Attended morning planning meetings, processed client documentation and responded to all investment or market related queries. Was responsible for capturing all new retirement or transfer new and existing business. Worked with an immediate team of about 10 individuals including my team leader - consultations and interaction would be continuos throughout the day. Enjoyed keeping track of all investment patterns and movements as well as speaking to clients. The most challenging aspect was rigorous data capturing - this accounted for about 70% of my daily duties as well as being able to assist on all current affairs queries which may have caused investor panic.

Pros: Brilliant client interaction training - provide excellent quality work & service
Cons: Linear retail/operational exposure, no analysis (monotonous data capturing intensive)

Motivated young and ambitious ! Willing to learn and grow.

I am a young professional who is determined to forge a career in the trading world. I am confident and motivated and believe I have the mindset necessary to become a great trader (sporting background). I want to begin a career which I enjoy doing and look forward to everyday. Trading is what I want to do, it is my passion. I do not have much work experience as I have just started my current role at Allan Gray. I currently have to be excellent with all aspects of client servicing and also have a fundamental understanding of our unit trust offerings as well as investment fundamentals. My trading experience to date is also limited, however I have two platforms open in my name and I watch and participate in the market regularly. I want to learn as much as I can about this skill in the corporate setting but need the opportunity to learn der an experienced mentor.

Pros: Great brand
Cons: Hard to move across divisions

Excellent brand

Division run by ex head of IT with no sales experience which made it very challenging and unsustainable, especially because I was supposed to bebased in Jhb Co-workers were excellent and full of energy, most were recruited straight from varsity. Work life balance frowned upon and totally unacceptable.

Pros: Great opportunity to grow
Cons: Working hours never end

Allan Gray is a company filled with amazing people and benefits but it has its own challenges

The people at Allan Gray are like no other. The people you work with will challenge you and grow you but also laugh with you. The have a lot of benefits like free lunch, fruit in the office every day, subsidy parking, great bonus structure. However, I often felt like my value as a single person was not recognised. I often feel like the employees voice does not get heard.

Pros: Free lunches, subsidy parking, great bonus structure
Cons: Culture of working long hours

A review of a day in the life

A work day is filled with stats, fixing problems and quality checking. Co workers are challenging because they all pursue their own interest and will do anything to get ahead. There is a lot of favoritism. I like my job were it not for the people and low pay and the hours required its will be fine. IF you got rewarded for actually doing my work well and not be punished for efficiency I will be rich ;)

Pros: education benefits for kids
Cons: no overtime even though overtime is required

Amazing learning curve

I have demonstrated competent level of client servicing at an operations departmental level by means of processing instruction received from client while educating some clients about the nature of financial market in the Unit Trust industry. I have dealt with a magnitude of cases involving the transfer of pension funds between fund managers while facilitating more complex unit trust transfers whose technical natures is intensified by legislation.

Pros: Great culture
Cons: no development

Employee experience

It has been a major learning curve working in a multinational and large investment house. One has to work across various departments and build meaningful relationships internally and externally. It has been important to understand the role of the various departments and how they may impact on the overall performance of your individual projects.

Pros: Great exposure
Cons: Progression

Steep learning curve. Best progression opportunities are in Cape Town.

In the CSC you will work long hard hours to service clients. If you are not a very talkative person this may be a difficult role . You do get paid decently for the work you are doing. Do note that there is a steep learning curve and perfection is expected.

Pros: Great people
Cons: Harsh working environment
