Good for research
I currently don't work at the CSIR. It was good, just did not have a position for me at the time. I enjoy the reach work and the work life balance. I learnt lots of instruments and for good work experience in the managamne for a lab.
Pros: Good networking with other labs
Cons: no room to get promoted.

Technology Development and Implementation
The morning start with coffee and chit chat at the tea room, then moves to more serious brain stormindg session. Best place to work with great minds, a mixture of both scientists and engineers in one roof. Innovative minds create best technology to address challenges in south africa
Pros: Great opportunity to study further
Cons: Very academic

Excellent learning curve
It is good for career development, but the salary is not enough to survive especially when you started there as a general worker. You qualifications don't count if you got them while you're working there. Your years of experience is just a number since they will hire someone with less experience and earn more than you.
Pros: Great place to learn
Cons: No overtime

Excellent platform for science and technology
It's been a great journey in assisting government institutions with (1) infrastructure development projects, (2) performance assessment of their facilities including (3) planning related to their facilities management.
Pros: Great opportunity for growth
Cons: Routine working environment

Poor leadership, poor management, poor strategy.
The CSIR is intended to bridge academic and private sectors. It has failed in this goal. It is unable to retain or rectuit talent since it pays far below market related salaries, it does not have the capacity to support research or innovation and is heavily loaded with beuracracy in an effort to limit corruption. This results in a scientific institute that has very few scientists, an innovator that cannot engage with business and a bloated institution that lives off of government research grants without delivering much. It's a good place to get involved with the sciences and finish a master's or a PhD but a poor place to work if your desire is to persue research or have real world impact.
Pros: Great opportunities for students
Cons: Very poor opportunities for professionals.
