This is a great opportunity to enhance and grow my skills in the private sector.

Work time consist of normal 8 hour day starting at 07:15 the morning till 15:45 the evening. Daily tasks is to start with requesting of reports and evaluate/rectify wrong allocations via journals. Do status updates on losses and debts. Clear ledger accounts monthly. Evaluate, controll and monitor Audit queries. Consolidate monthly AGSA action plans, losses action plans and operational plans.. I have a good relationship with my co workers and is always part of teambuilding exercises. I enjoy most to see acounts cleared and balancing. I also enjoy working with excel. Most challenging aspect of my work is job satisfaction and promotion opportunties due to political and policy interfearace.

Pros: Good working relationships with fellow.employees
Cons: No continuious job training and development.

Excellent learning environment

It was good exprience to work as a asset management officer at the department of correctional services. I learnt a lot of artilary that can serve as my strength for any accounting assignment in the future. I improve a lot in my interpersonal relationship . I learnt a lot from the people that I worked with. People there was friendly and respectful I learnt lots of skills in that department like problem solving and working to meet deadlines. The programmes availaible at the department were very interesting. I enjoy participating in those programme like health programme and cultural programme the most challenging aspect of the job was when doing asset verification and recovery. This one was the most challenging. But we manage to overcome this with the help of core workers.

Pros: good opportunities to shape own career path
Cons: it was risky because one works near or convicts

Excellent learning curve

Sometimes it's disgusting. Sometimes it's violent - on occasion, brutally so. It's always stressful and sometimes tragic, to the point I sometimes felt like it was leeching away at my soul. But it can also be hilarious, rewarding, and occasionally uplifting.Being an officer in the first years of employment, you often feel alone and isolated,You learn you have fewer rights than inmates,You learn excessive paranoia and fear and how to channel them to stay alive. You learn to be firm but fair. You learn honor and truth are a must. Respect is a must.I have learned humility and humanity from the dark side of life's perspective, and that I am a better person deep in my soul. My fundamental morals are rock solid,Due to the types of situations that arise with inmates, correctional officers face more than the usual amount of stress and anxiety at work.

Pros: Learning more about prison life and offenders
Cons: less training and promotions

Training and development of individuals in a workplace

Facilitation of rehabilitation programmes to address the offending behaviour and encouraging the offender to develop themselves in market related skills I'm a team worker and independent worker That people need to be developed continously to be able to explore their potential and growth, every body is unique and special and needs to be given a second chance in life to excel Developing and training individual to realise their potential since everyone is different and has potential It is challenging to deal with individual who do not believe to themselves and who are negative about life as life does give us the opportunity to either grow or stay in one place, people who are hard on themselves and always blame situations for under development yet not doing anything to improve the situation snd wants to justify the need for change

Pros: Great opportunity for development
Cons: long working hours without break and refreshments

Excellent opportunity for growth

Getting stories from different directorates that assists in me compiling the external newsletter, people are always cooperative and willing to assist. Doing presentations on protocol and branding, its not long since i started at the department so everyone is willing to assist as I am still learning the ropes. The challenging part that i have learnt to overcome is adjusting from the tourism environment to the justice system. i have since learnt that Communication will remain that irrespective of the environment. You just have to learn everything you can about the new environment and learn fast so you can land running. That is what I have been doing even when I came to this department. What I enjoy much is profiling the work done by offenders, this showcases that the department doesnt not only confine them to prison but rehabilitates them and prepares them for when they go out to the world, empowering them to be ready for a working world/class.

Pros: There are vast opportunities for growth in the department but presently all posts are frozen because of cost containment measures in place. There is no budget.
Cons: Working hours are not negotiable, they are from 7:15 till 15h45.

Excellent promotion opportunities

I enjoy liasing with officals from different business units who supplies me with information to write articles for our external newsletter. I adjusted very quicly from the tourism to the justice environment. i guess its becase communication is the same, the only difference is the service/product we have to sell. I also enjoy profiling the work done by our offender (prisoners) who have been rehabilitated by the management areas (prisons) in preparing them for the outside world. The only challenge is that we cannot have pictures of the prisoners who does the good work for security reasons.

Pros: Vast promotion opportunities
Cons: The are no flexi time, we all start at 07:15 and knock off at 15h45

Asset balancing and reconciliation

Correctional services is a very big organisation with different fields of work and my own field was Supply chain where I have learnt working under pressure at all times,I had times where I worked as an independent but most of the time I enjoyed team work.I have learnt how to deal with different behaviours and different characters in the work place, dealing with the suppliers from the outside, inmates and correctional official official and I had to be alert at all times. my job as an asset clerk was to ensure the safeguarding of assets of the department from and the most challenging part about my Job was that everyone seemed not to understand the role that she/ he had to play when it comes to assets allocated in his/her offices, so when I'm doing verification of assets I will find many losses, shortages and surpluses which I had to reconcile everymonth because assets had to balance and I had to sensitize to the responsible officials about accountability of government funds should any permanent loss take place

Pros: None
Cons: I had to go extra mile at times due to audit queries and annual asset verification from 07h15 to 18h00
