Not the right business for me

The culture was not suitable for me, we had a boss that didn't know HR or understand corporate. My role was interesting & I worked with a great team. We did a lot of fighting fires from business, the organization was going through change - transferred parts of the business to other companies, which involved a lot of Change Management during the S197 & S189.

Pros: It was a bad career move
Cons: Political

Had great growth and opportunities to learn

Not a bad place to work... However the business channels are very competitive with each other and a lot of emphasis is given else making it seems like other divisions do not matter.... No company culture.. Depending on management your experience can go either way...

Pros: Seen as a OK mid sizes brand
Cons: Short staffed

Exposure to financial markets

When I joined the company I had no idea what financial markets were and how they work. Through building strong relations with co workers and stakeholder I got exposed to different aspects of the business and I got to interact with different levels of the business.

Pros: Excellent learning curve
Cons: Long working hours

Wonderful technical and professional foundations gained as an entry-level young grad

Typical day at the office involved mainly daily on-the-job duties from 8pm to 5pm with certain days requiring working extra hours. I had a very good working relationship with fellow staff members with open communication, exchanging ideas and could count on them for work related advice or even personal issues I had. Through my brief but wonderful entry role as a Reconciliation Analyst at Stanlib, I acquired competencies in back office finance, admin, teamwork, communication and cherished soft skill fundamentals which I can leverage to help streamline adapting to the job. The most challenging aspect of the job was definitely adjusting to the tight, daily deadlines as the job involved numerous high-value transactions within a given set timeframe. Tough as it was, I learned and adapted to the demands.

Pros: Great learning and developing environment
Cons: Limited opportunities

Job offers varying opportunities for advancement

I m in charge of operational risk mitigation, ranging from implementing risk controls to fraud investigation and reporting. I basically work with everyone in the business in bringing whatever untoward things to their attention and to be rectified immediately to avoid financial and reputational risks. I enjoy my work as its not monotonous and rather varying and challenging on daily basis, I have learnt to manage my time properly and integrity as two paramount traits required in the my position. I provide management with constant feedback on operational risk aspects through daily and monthly reports.

Pros: opens doors for venturing into any business unit as operational risk skills is in demand
Cons: resistance and push-back by some business units managers

Striving to be the best

The company has been in a transition phase for a few years now and the aim is to be a leader in the industry. This means that there is constant change and the environment is for continuous improvement with various projects to get this going. The leadership lives this vision and it is cascaded down. Drawbacks of this organisation is that there are too many levels of management and in some teams this vision gets diluted. The staff are keen to be working here and are generally optimistic about the future of the organisation.

Pros: Large corporate with lots of internal opportunities
Cons: Too many layers of management
