Transnet National Ports Authority Reviews

A great exposure

I have a wonderful relation with almost every individual in the office and not just my co-workers. There is a nice culture of greeting and hugging as if your blood related family and it shows appreciation among each other. I have learnt that people in this company breath the culture charter values and not just cram them for peace sake. I love it when our leadership call us at the auditorium to check if we are still fine under any circumstances we we come across, these are called Imbizo sessions between the people and management. The most challenging aspect is that when one is seeking information from various stakeholders, you always get hiccups when management does not support you.

Pros: Great company for maritime and ports exposure
Cons: Too much red tapes

Good environment to gain exposure to big projects

I don't have much to say. Not a conducive environment for a young professional who wants to learn from various projects. The pace at which anything is done is very slow and counter productive in my view.

Pros: You work on marine type projects which are hard to come by.
Cons: Bureaucracy

Growth filled experience

My period at Transnet has been a great development period. I learnt a lot from all the different characters i interfaced with internally and externally. My most challenging times have been the best times in the organisation as they helped with my crisis management skills making it easier to work on a normal day.

Pros: Great learning opportunities
Cons: Political changes

Diverse environment that allows one to hone skills in various areas of managment

I am responsible for Procurement of goods and services for the region - and I am also a member of the Executive team which means my job really entails making positive contributions that are aligned to the business objectives on a daily basis. I focus in my functional area but at the same time the environment enables us to work as a team towards organisational goals.

Pros: Exciting space which presents different scenarios which allows you to grow as a result of exposure
Cons: There are no opportunities for promotion

Critical Success Factors in current job.

I am in an excellent job where no single day is similar to the next. I am involved in diverse activities in any and all matters concerning the employment relationship, conflict management, discipline, dispute resolution, as well as employee well-being. What is challenging is to get line management to understand the link between the proper management of human capital and bottom line or organizational well-being. However, I derive immense satisfaction from observing results of these efforts.

Pros: An opportunity for growth is to be welcome.
Cons: There are no cons in my current job.

Currently responsible for Job Evaluations and structures.

I have been with Transnet for more than 26 years i.e. since 1991. Through my career in HR, I have been an HR Manager for 10 years, National OD Manager for 5 years, Training Manager for 2 years and now back to OM. I have worked for three Operation Divisions within Transnet i.e. Transnet Engineering, Transnet Port Terminals and now Transnet National Port Authority.

Pros: There is great potential for growth in Transnet.
Cons: Just need to be more accountable in HR and a change.

Recognition at Transnet

The company is not good in rewarding internal loyal employees if they are promoted; it is much attractive to join from outside because only then the company will consider paying market related salaries.

Pros: great opportunity for exposure
Cons: no recognition

Good Growth Opportunity

Good Company to work for. Have a healthy working relationship with co-workers and team. Exposure to manage a project of R100mil independently. Enjoyed the independence and exposure afforded to grow. The challenge of a highly unionised environment but I handled the relationship with labour very well. I will work for the company again.

Pros: Opportunity for growth
Cons: Long Distance from family

Opportunity for Growth

Managing a Department with 5 portfolios , Mentoring reporters, writing monthly reports on performance and statistics, procuring items ,I have good relationship with my colleagues, I have learnt that when opportunities for growth present themselves to you or the others be ready to say yes"Victory loves preparation".I enjoy listening to stories from people from all walks of life that make me realize that I am privileged and that comes with responsibility. The most challenging aspect of the job is knowing that the future of our company, employees and their families lies in the hands of what we do today together as a team.

Pros: Broad overview to the business operations and supporting functions
Cons: The misconception of why occupational safety is an vital part of everyday living and operations
