University of Pretoria Reviews

Pushing performance and loading more work, without any incentives

The University of Pretoria exploit their employees and they do not pay as they suppose to pay. They just expect everyone just to work work work and not think about the employee. E.g. the administrators are overload with work. Two major functions were dumped on the administrators that are already overload with no explanation or any further communication. With these two new functions the administrators are suppose to climb the position level with at least one level. Then you ask yourself what is the people doing that was previously doing this functions. How do their job descriptions look like. Even the cleaners are overloaded with one person doing another persons work and his or own for more than six weeks and the supervisors are just saying they don't know.

Pros: Closing in December for about two weeks without one putting in leave
Cons: Overworked employees with low pay and average benefits

Good learning curve

In terms of studies and career growth if you are an academic you have a very bright future and you will be well looked after. If you are support staff there is little space for promotion. The students are very pleasant to work with. You also get a lot of support from co-workers. Sometimes you are short-handed - too little hours in a day to get everything done. Stress levels can become high if you do not keep your attention focused on your deliverable.

Pros: You can study for free
Cons: Not a lot op opportunity for promotion

Excellent learning curve

Huge University with a lot of study choices. I'm not an employee of the University but rather a student. There isn't much I can say about the University except give a student's point of view.

Pros: Great opportunity to learn
Cons: Long hours studying

A beautifully diverse environment for growth

Beautifully diverse environment for growth in both cultural and intellectual terms. I like the e-learning environment. Doing outreach to schools or present to schools at various exhibitions has further enhanced my ability to work in teams and reach out to those in need of the information to make critical decisions regarding their careers. The outreach teams are so diverse in race, culture and geographic location that one always looks forward to meeting people from different countries.

Pros: Great opportunity for international networks
Cons: quite demanding in terms of time yet less commensurate compensation

Working Day

On an average day I get to work at 8am and leave between 4-5pm. I grade the academic assignments and tests of the BCMP students as well as set up their quizzes and test questions. On select days, such as Fridays I also engage in teaching classes which include the physical examination techniques and taking a history from patients. I have an excellent working relationship with my colleagues and have strong interpersonal bonds with them. I have learnt to be a self starter, to work hard and do my best for my students. The challenging part of my job is that I don't get very much clinical experience which is what I would like to do and I'm not permanently employed. I'm currently working pro bono as I have not been able to secure a clinical associate post anywhere as yet

Pros: Great for experience
Cons: Not being paid or offered a post

Mineral Processing

I respond well to requests from colleagues and students in a timely manner and I am adept at prioritizing multiple ongoing projects. Additionally, I am adept at: • Evaluating alternative medium that can be used to replace Magnetite in the dry dense medium fluidised bed process. • Magnetic Separation, Spirals, Samplers, Solid –Liquid separation, Filter presses, Centrifuges and Water Treatment • Analysing the influence of particle size on metallurgical performance • Evaluating of reagent Rinkalore X as a collector in the Copper Process. I am a self-starter and not scared of challenges. I am also deeply familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and power point, and adapt quickly to new programs. As a part of your organisation’s team, I hope to bring a resourceful, flexible and hardworking attitude to contribute to your organisation continued growth.

Pros: Great opportunity to learn more
Cons: Routine

Support in self development

I am happy for the support that I get from my seniors in developing myself and towards my research project that I have just started. My job is not that challenging because the I perform less duties than my previous employer. I have improved so much because it is a big company and they also allow us to grow and be able to share our knowledge with subordinates.

Pros: Opportunity to study further
Cons: none

Working at the lab

A typical work day for me is always an interesting one. I get to the lab I start cleaning up sterilizing everything sweeping the floor. I start my work by wearing my lab-coat and gloves again I have to sterilize my gloves. then other colleagues usually arrive after that, an I great them with a smile. We begin to plan what we will do for the day and hope to achieve. I would describe my relationship with my co-workers as strictly work related we never talk about each others personal lives. I have learnt that hard work pays off if its executed properly and wisely. I enjoy just working and having a productive day at the lab. then later on read journals that actually makes my work easy to understand. the most challenging job is being judge based on my looks and the fact that I am a black woman. i get restricted from doing certain things cause of my gender.

Pros: N/A
Cons: having to travel from 3am to 5pm collecting samples
