University of The Western Cape Reviews

It has been a learning experience.

The working hours are not as stringent as they could be. My day is usually busy, nut I enjoy being kept busy. I have a diverse group of people as co-workers, and I generally get along with them, however, I am particularly close with individuals who work alongside me on a daily basis. I have learnt how to resolve difficult office conflicts. I have also learnt how to work in a group alongside people who have unique personalities. The thing that I have enjoyed the most is the interactions I have had with my colleagues, my seniors and the students that I have tutored. I have also grown to like the administrative part of my work. The most challenging part of my job has been fulfilling my academic obligations while juggling work. Completing an LL.M whilst being a lecturer's assistant is quite the challenge, but one that can be surmounted through discipline.

Pros: Getting to continue with my studies while working.
Cons: The mental exhaustion of having to prepare for the tutorials that I give, while simultaneously preparing for my own lectures and doing research for the various academic papers that I have had to write.to

Management Accountant, full function.

I have great exposure to the education environment. Line managers' or even executive lines decisions and how it impacts the bottom line of the organisation. My full responsibility to ensure that the organisation have sufficient cash at all times and to ensure that that any excess cash are invested optimally at all times is a challenging job on its own. Normal activities includes the timeous completion of Management Accounts as well the UWC budget as well as five year plane for council and finance committee of council. The interaction with line management an staff clearly gives a lot of insight into the business as a whole. A very big plus is also the interactions with various other institutions and the way they operate.

Pros: Good understanding of the industry
Cons: The you do much more that other institutions with very less staff complement.

I also manage the Budget section within Finance and Services. Other responsibilities include: Cash flow and investment management, staff management, representation at internal and external forums, audit liaisons, system monitoring etc. I have been elected employer trustee of the university’s Pension and Provident funds

Pros: Great learning curve and experience
Cons: Unrest in education.

Great exposure to working environment

I am a part leader at the University of the Western Cape Creative Arts Choir. I am a student leader thus was put in place by the Res Life Centre to lead. There I learn't; peace building and administrative skills, and leadership skills. I enjoy being a student leader becasue you get to learn a lot about leader and managing people for a specific cause. Since the coir is objective based, making people and preparing them for the set objectives is the most challenging part of the job because one has to learn to manage people and motivate them to do their their best: this is the highlight of what I learnt there.

Pros: Ability to reach deliverables
Cons: people oriented

My day at work as a Chief Invigilator

A typical day as an chieh invigilator will be to be on your feet and to try and be everywhere at one time. The invigilators assigned to you will want to have a part of you in the mornings as the sessions starts. All kind of problems will surface like having a student who is not registered or is supposed to wright at another venue or is writing clashes. The question paper have a page 6 and 7 missing. The lecturer is nowhere to be found and youneed him to assist the students with their question paper. As the time goes by you will then be able to do your normal days duties. To keep register of how many students wrote exams and to have the same amount of scripts . at the end of my day I won't have it any other way.

Pros: Great oppertunity for promotion
Cons: Not permanent

Excellent opportunity

Its a part time employment, working Tuesday-Thursdays in a office of 6 staff members. We have an good relationship in the office, we laugh, cry and share joys together. Everyone is supportive of one another. We strive to achieve excellence daily. I have learned to provide excellent customer service to students and customers, to treat others with respect and to obey authorities. I enjoy the feeling of getting up and walking into a good office atmosphere, the love, support and challenging work tasks.

Pros: great chances of growth as long as one puts in the work and shows potential

MY DAY AT WORK

A work day for me will be starting work at 7am. Making sure the previous days deadlines were met and sent out. Preparing myself for the day by putting aside my priorities to be attended to ASAP. Thereafter work that does not really need immediate attention. Drink a cup of tea and start working. Having brief meeting with my supervisor on progress. I have a very strong relationship with collegues and get along with all very well. I have learned that time management is very important and that it needs to be done correct in order to meet deadlines and be flexible. I enjoy my work and i believe that you need to always understand the task you are performing in order to make the best of it especially in report writing. The challenging part of my job is the sustem i am working on, what happens at times is that the server just stops working and that prevent us from performing our daily tasks at times.

Pros: You get to learn a lot of methodologies of projects and project management itself
Cons: The systems randomly shut down

A day in a PhD candidate life

Working at my company is tiring, you have a lot of work to do in a day. The work day starts at 8am and ends at 6pm. However, after work I get to make food for myself then work on reviews. Read more on my field of expertise and get updated. My relationship with my co-workers is good though we don't speak much since everyone is focused on their work. I have learnt some presentation skills and being independent. I enjoy working in the lab and getting good results. The most challenging aspect of the job is doing reviews on my project since it requires a lot of reading.

Pros: no tax payed
Cons: long working hours
