For the start of the career you can make it then look somewhere else for job. The management of the company is only looking for a certain group. Pension funds does not grow as good as other competitors. The medical aid is only working at Middleburg and surrounding at other parts of the country you struggle.

Columbus will take your soul

This used to be one of the best companies in South Africa. But since the ladt CEO uncle Dave Martin retired columbus went from being on top of the world to the worst place to work for within 3 years. Top management treat the people on the floor like we are just numbers, they put us on a 3 man shift the is super illegal, we are off only 3 days a month. If you want to get a primotion you must have at least the same qualification as an engineer, even for planner of team manager. I have work my hands to the bones and not once dit management even came to say thank you.

Pros: At least i was never payed late even once
Cons: Very very long hours. 3man shift, but the illegal kind. Treat millwrights like we are nothing. I hate this place

Great test of character

Great company to work for. Work hours are horrible though. It was a huge learning curve for me and great test of character. 90% of employees are not happy and feel stuck. Overtime is not paid and we take forced leave when ever management feels order book is low. Guys on the floor take excessive sick leave.

Pros: No strikes
Cons: Long hours for shift workers (76hours in one week)

Stable company to work for

We have a very strong local sales team that serves to the best of their ability, especially when dealing with difficult customers at times. We work in a heavy manufacturing environment and we do a lot of plant tours with our customers, which is an amazing experience for the customers to see stainless steel production in action.

Pros: Challenging environment
Cons: Pay scale

Good working experience

I’m working 3man shift which has taught me to endure, the company’s operations are automated which makes instrumentation a priority which exposes me to a lot of fault finding and the ability to work under pressure due to da importance of getting the plant to run The people are good teachers and mentors I’ve learnt alot.

Pros: Great exposure to the instrumentation field
Cons: Lack of permanent work

Working under pressure and working safe

I work shifts.. Always punctual and eager to challenge the day with a positive thought and keeping safety in thought. I relate very well with colleagues in order to flow with team work and ensure stable respect for each other. I enjoy the challenges and pressures to reach daily target with good production and safety. Work is always good when entering premises with a positive taught to accept all challenges brought forward. Weather may be a challenge since heat challenges the body especially when working shifts.. But there's always a way to keep up with work

Pros: Learning to work with people. Understanding people and their different cultures. Punctuality and safety perspectives
Cons: Different shifts

My Experience

Working at Columbus Stainless boosted my career a lot. A typical work day would include handling the shift and being first line maintenance to any Instrument related problems. I enjoy working with my co-workers and always learning from them. Sometimes it can be challenging to fix a problem brealdown when production but I push through and everything works out. I enjoy fixing things and getting to know the basis theory with all the equipment I work with.

Pros: Different working hours
Cons: Nights Shift
