Excellent learning curve
Csir is a great place to get technical experience as a graduate to mould you in your chosen speciality. The work life balance is fair as there are sports facilities, a gym and flexible working hours. The environment is conducive to career development and experimentation, however it's a bit more difficult to get a promotion. Most of the work I did was research and development of electronic warfare systems. That included spec development, prototype development, testing and verification of electronic warfare specification. I also did systems engineering task such user requirement spec development.
Pros: Great place for technical experience
Cons: Takes longer to get promotion

Excellent learning curve, work-life balance
CSIR is the in business of selling time. Thus the type of people I service are knowledge worker who are focussed on Intellectual Property. The environment is characterised with bright minds who are in Science, Engineering and Technology. I am challenged to be a critical thinker. They are very demanding as they can read and interpret policies themselves, I am challenged to always be a step ahead of the employee workforce by reading and affiliating to relevant structures.
Pros: Autonomy
Cons: Growth and Development

Excellent learning curve
As a data scientist, my job was to analyze data given and provide real-life solutions for our potential clients. We worked as a group to tackle the problems at hand. We used machine learning and python programming for modeling. I was taught machine learning, communications skills a.nd python programming to make our job easier. Meeting people from different companies was something I enjoyed the most since networking is very important these days. Working with lazy people was challengings. Data: sometimes the data we used is huge, thus making it difficult to analyze and find solutions. In general, using data and analyzing data to solve real-world problems is my passion. I had a chance to study physics, astrophysics, statistics, python and other programming languages for both M.Sc Mathematical Science and Astrophysics. I am happy and look forward to using the skills acquired at CSIR to solve real-world problems in any company.
Pros: Working with data
Cons: working with lazy co-workers

My first Job
A typical day at work would include communicating and following up with, processing invoices while checking for compliance, make supplier payments, complete journals whilst enjoying a cup of coffee. I work in a team of four, a very close knit team always stepping in, in instances of leave or crisis. I enjoy the ongoing supplier relationship, the most challenging aspect of the job would be month end because it can be very unpredictable for e.g.volumes of invoices but I always enjoy a challenge and all month ends can't be the same.
Pros: Very relaxed environmen, priortise staff
Cons: Little opportunity for growth

CSIR is a good place to work if its apartheid legacy is fully dismantled.
Initially things were very good and most of the people I work with in my unit were a solid team. Overtime things changed as seemingly some people put their personal interests first at others expenses. Unfortunately this has somehow negatively impacted on others performances to the extent that others left the organization. On a typical day everyone focuses on delivering the projects at hand. My relationship with my co-workers is good. We consult one another on many of the projects to ensure consistency. I learnt a lot regarding projects and how to manage them and relations with stakeholders. Patience is a virtue for us when dealing with customers when working on difficult projects that require thorough engagement with the client. The most challenging aspect of my job is timely delivery due to red tape and individuals decisions regarding processes.
Pros: A good learning curve in ones career.
Cons: Not much growth as this is determined by individuals who can be biased depending on whether they like you (get along with you) or not, i.e supervisors.

Excellent learning curve and a good networking experince
My work includes a lot of reading and lab work. I am given a research topic or come up with my own and apply for funding. Once the funding is atcheived, I plan the work and execute it in consultation with my line manager. I have been given many opportunities to travel and network.
Pros: Great learning and networking
Cons: Normal research cons like having to work after hours when the work requires that
