Department of Home Affairs Reviews

Excellent learning experience

The office is always busy. I have learnt a lot about the legal framework and how to apply these in my daily work. The Department encourages educational development and even offers training in selected disciplines.

Pros: I can almost say guaranteed job security
Cons: There are no promotion opportunities

My work history

The job I like the most is to sourcing the quotation and sending the RFQ to the suppliers making some follow-up and reminding them with date line of quotation. Inter relationship with business unit helping them to understand their needs and with compliance of quotation and make relationship with suppliers and business unit to get better items of negotiating the price especially those are more than R100 000 and above. The most challenging aspects is when the suppliers fail to deliver in time or not deliver at all because I will be accountable and have to act as a middle man to protect the business unit and the suppliers trying to get the reason why not delivery takes place. And sometimes the suppliers didn't give the business unit the quality that was expected I learn so much were by the suppliers before delivery we may ask to give us a samples example if the supplier should deliver the chairs, we need to see the quality of the chair before delivery

Pros: more than ten years experience
Cons: 10 hrs

Working at home affairs is environment that is conducive the staff are committed people as we work as a team to achieving targets set. My relationship with my Co workers is good we help each other whenever ones stuck and have established a good relationship. I've learned a lot throughout the HR section ranging from labour relations, performance management, leave management and recruitment. I enjoyed working in the labour relations dealing with misconduct cases and grievances, attending arbitration cases. The challenging aspect was the persal only permanent employees were allowed to use persal which was a stumbling block

Pros: extensive work knowledge
Cons: none

Excellent skills development

Daily I am busy organizing the diary/appointments and traveling arrangements when required. I am responsible for all communication to and from the DDG's office whether written or verbal. I have two co-workers of which I have a very good relationship as we are required to work from time to time together on projects. Everyday you experience different challenges which can bring positive or negative responses in the office, which means you learn everyday something or from someone. The post of a Personal Assistant is where I want to be as I love working with people and to assist where possible. I am creative, determined and motivated to be tasked with anything in my environment.

Pros: Developing beter skills
Cons: Being not used correctly

My day at Department of Home Affairs prepares me to a greater journey, dealing with professional and skilled coworkers. Its been a greater experience of a lifetime, I have learned the importance of knowing the nature of the business no matter what your job title might be. When I am at the work station before I resove the Revenue, Journals, Reconciliation, Receipts, Bank Exceptions I must apply the Batho Pele principle at all times.

Pros: Exposure to National security and Revenue
Cons: At the moment the department department can't afford to hire new Staff.

Communication skills

The work I'm doing is to allow and refuse entry, if passengers meet the immigration requirements we do allow entry if not it is a refusal. We go according the laws and regulations of the immigration acts. Team work I'm good with it share views with my colleagues. I've learned to be patient and have an understanding, since people we are not the same with different characters. I enjoy when we cracked a difficult case with my colleagues working together as a team. Most challenging things is the system of our government.

Pros: No great opportunity for promotions
Cons: No enough resources
