University of Cape Town Reviews

Very good working environment

I have held three different positions at UCT in the last three and half years. Between September 2016 – June 2019, I was a postdoctoral researcher at the African Institute of Financial Markets and Risk Management (AIFMRM). I enjoyed my experience at AIFMRM. My colleagues were very friendly and willing to collaborate on different projects. Between August 2019 – November 2019, I was a Senior Researcher at SALDRU. Here, I got to lead a team of three junior researchers on an interesting project about youth unemployment in South Africa. During this time, I learned a lot about the South African labour market, especially challenges government faces in its efforts to reduce youth unemployment. It was challenging leading a team of researchers from a distance (as I was based in Uganda for part of the project) but it worked-out very well. For January and February of 2020, I am lecturing an Honours level quantitative course (Mathematics for Economists).

Pros: Type of work (research and teaching) I enjoy
Cons: Short contracts

My work experience has been nothing but fruitful and pleasant, our relationship has been pleasant among my peers. I have learned to work in a team and alone. the most enjoyable moments were when clients are happy and satisfied and the challenges were processing all ADHOC payments before final pay run but through team work and dedication I have learned to manage and succeed without delays

Pros: Open to any oppertunities to the benefit of the company
Cons: I am flexable to any Hours

Great for personal growth

Chemical engineering processes can be challenging, and as a Teaching Assistant a daily duty is to study different chemical process plants simulated by students and advise on the way forward. Discuss alternative solutions with co-workers, and everyday I learn that there are many ways to solve a problem, they might be all correct, and that is also the part I enjoy the most. The challenging part is that sometimes your way, is not the best way and you have to change your perspective to come up with a better solution.

Pros: Diversity in projects
Cons: Long working hours
