University of Cape Town Reviews

Teaching is part of learning

My job involved assisting second year students with Analogue electronics content. This broadened my knowledge as i received and answered questions from different bright individuals. The opportunity gave me a chance to learn and understand the subject even better.

Pros: Great learning opportunity
Cons: limited scope

Good environment

The University of Cape Town is a leading University in the continent and offers a good name on one's CV. The university offers good work - life balance and al. However, there are no opportunity for growth if you are not part of the academic staff. Our managers in the department can do better in leading the department.

Pros: Work in an environment that gives work life balance
Cons: No opportunity for further growth

Good learning experience

I really enjoyed the learning experience but was not paid for marking, extra hours and extra work. Mental health and general support was not provided by the university but was blessed to have amazing fellow tutors that assisted.

Pros: Good academic experience
Cons: Not adequate pay

Excellent networking environment

Such has been a great working experience, for me, as well as for my tutlings. It has been fulfilling to see other people academically and intellectually, as facilitated by my pedagogy. Equally important, it was fulfilling to see myself grow academically and intellectually, under the banner of what I frame 'embodied capital'.

Pros: Great networking and growing opportunity
Cons: It is demanding

Better growth opportunities

I eagerly seek to integrate, re-establish, add value and expand on my current skills. Also, I would like to work in an IT environment so that the theoretical knowledge I obtained from my degree, be put to practice. For example an junior DevOps assistant.

Pros: The environment I worked had great opportunities to excel academically
Cons: Limited growth opportunities for non academic staff

Better growth opportunities

It's a great environment to work in if you are pursuing a career as a cardiologist and have a passion for research. - work out your work breakdown structure. 6 monthly reviews. - quiet environment. Everyone has their own targets and projects. - what I've learned is that pursing knowledge should be a lifelong/ ongoing process. - no micro management - the job can easily reach a plateau, if not combined with after hour learning.

Pros: The environment I worked had great opportunities to excel academically.
Cons: Limited growth opportunities for non medical academic staff

Good learning curve

UCT has good values, but these are not being implemented. I have experienced the organization to not be compassionate and friendly to staff work-life balance. What seemed to be more important was getting the work done. Not much intervention is being done when employees raise issues. Support is not being given to employees

Pros: Good opportunity to further our studies and specialize
Cons: Toxic working environment

Excellent

My typical day at work is busy and the role is that of office administration and secretarial duties such as assisting with the coordination of events, P-Card clearance, record keeping, processing of payments, travelling arrangements, report writing, social media advertisement, etc. I have a great team and good working relationship. At first is was challenging processing some of the finance documents that adhere to the company policies as there was no on the job training. but managed to build resilience and self taught myself on how to effectively perform all the required work tasks.

Pros: field related and career advancement
Cons: The role occupied is no longer stimulating
