University of Kwazulu-Natal Reviews

Out of my expertise, but definitely worth the challenge and experience

The working environment was a lively atmosphere about it, a great experience not only for work and learning, but to also build and maintain genuine long lasting friendships from interim worker all the way to supervisors and employers!

Pros: Great opportunity to learn about the real stuff, 'on the field' type of experience
Cons: Sometimes having to work longer hours than expected

Excellent learning environment

The day without being at work is boring if it a weekend you wish it can be Monday soon to go back to that lovely environment where you work with enthusiasm people and supportive colleagues. What I have learned is to be a team player and able to multitask at the same time. What I enjoy is to give training to our users/clients where you get a chance to interact with different people and explore their samples at the same time.

Pros: Growing within the industry
Cons: Long working hours

Research Assistant

During the week, i would plan the schedule for the activities that i will be doing, prioritize the most important ones then deal with them first. Usually in the start of the season planting and land preparation was important then it will be maintaining the crops making sure the pest does not harm them. I had the data capturing job also making of the pedigree of my plants, measuring their growth. In my project I took part in maize farming, evaluating mineral content and introduced low phytic acid maize to farmers for the sensory evaluation. I also worked with communities and schools, coordinating the nutritional education and awareness programmes and engaging with different stake holders in ensuring the smooth running of programmes.

Pros: I presented at the conference and i won 3rd price because of my work. I was able tgo interact with other people who knew more about farming maize
Cons: People slacking while we working however i made sure i work with them to finish in time

It has been a place for me to encourage others

My daily tasks require me to be an all rounder.I multi-task with activities involving maintenance, logistics, procurement, facilitation of agreements, sit on various committees to facilitate improved quality management. My co-workers enjoy working with me . Our unit encourages various team building activities which help our students and staff work together to meet strict research deadlines. In my current employ, I train various people. This has helped me develop a holistic approach to working with others. It has laid a foundation of patience and perseverance. Our company focuses on research. Research has many changing dynamics. If one works here, one has to be adaptable and facilitate exchanges with people across all religions and cultures.I enjoy seeing students develop from immaturity to responsibility...from being part of an organisation to part of a team who together fight HIV. The job is always challenging because of its various dynamics and deliverable associated with research.

Pros: It has steered me in the direction I wish to develop career wise
Cons: The work is contract, which does not allow for personal develop long term

Working with students

I deal with first entry students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Westville campus. I assist students during practical sessions, mark their scientific reports and capture and record their marks. I am a very professional individual with a very strong work ethic, I work both individually and collectively with my colleagues to assist student with all the laboratory equipments and procedures. I have mastered to work under pressure and how to deal with students accordingly. I have learnt to have a functional working relationship with the lecturers, students and other personnel within our institution. I have mastered the art of working with students a lot as I am also a student myself. The interesting aspects of this work is getting to be engaged in a scientific workplace. I hardly find anything challenging in this department because I usually like to test my limits and facing challenges as a learning curve.

Pros: Exposure to scientific equipment and techniques
Cons: Contract positions
