I have a great working relationship with my colleagues and supportive Head of department. The biggest challenge is that I am doing the It Support, Management and Procurement all on my own.

Good learning environment as one is exposed to wide engineering facets.

Create a methodology for investigating a particular problem. Plan an experiment, design apparatus, select instrumentation, manufacture necessary equipment that is needed for the experiment. Conduct experiments, collect data, analyse data and discuss results. Perform simulations to compare to experimental results.

Cons: Too abstract

A qualified biochemist with an interest in Publich Health Policy

Passionate about the fields of health science and health policy, with an interest within research related to diagnostic science through the use of medical biochemistry. Using the skills that I have learned within the field of biochemistry, I am able to apply them within the industry of biotechnology to test for various microbiological pathogens as well as to analyse the biological composition of these samples. I also have an interest in how public health ethics can further improve public-health policy-making. With this idea in mind, I have seen the need to incorporate more of an understanding of Ethical and Bioethical systems into policy making, both for the public and private health sectors.

Pros: Great opportunity for industrial research
Cons: Challenging, depending on how much information is available based on a specific topic of research.

Good starter company

It’s a bigger company than expected. It allows one to learn a lot. It’s a good company to start in out of university as it allows one to learn what to expect in the working world.

Pros: People are friendly. Managers are not.
Cons: Long hours. Little pay.

Good employer to work for

Wits is a progressive employer. Employee relations are relatively good and employees have every reason to feel secured in their positions, of course with good performance on their part. In the Departments I have worked in, one is given some freedom to do the work without supervision, even very junior staff, as long as there are no issues with their performance.

Pros: Great opportunity for learning as the university pays for studies for staff, depending the institution one wants to study at is an approved and accreditted one.
Cons: Depending on which Department you work, there might be long hours involved, but generally we have normal working days.

Research development

Work at the University of the Witwatersrand is good. A typical day at work involves preparing for tutorials, reading scientific research articles and working on my own research. Relationships with co-workers are quite close as we usually rely on each other for tutorials and research progress meetings. It is easy to make friends who you can always trust to give you honest feedback on your work. The most challenging aspects of my job is keeping up with deadlines and come up with a novel approach for my work.

Pros: Great opportunity for research
Cons: Delayed feedback from supervisor

Doing administrative and clerical tasks (such as scanning or printing). Preparing and editing letters, reports, memos, and emails. Running errands to the post office or supply store. Arranging meetings, appointments, and executive travel. Answering phone calls and taking messages. Maintaining folders on servers. Recording meeting minutes. Liaising with teams and units. Tracking petty cash. Covering reception.

Pros: The relationship and rapport I have built with the person I work for and the appreciation for a job well done.
