Highly unionised environment, slow opportunity for promotion

A typical work day: Mostly resolving employee related queries ranging from salary to personal matters that require EAP referral to either social worker or psychologist. Relationship with co-workers is good with room for improvement I learnt to be more patient and tolerant with organised labour unions Employee Engagements, assisting employees with their work challenges. Motivating employees to study further and apply for available higher positions especially female employees. providing strategic guidance to the team while attending to the operational matters of the day. The most challenging aspect of my job Illegal work stoppages, assisting line managers and organised labour with relationship building. Working with more than one organised labour union

Pros: Great opportunity for promotion
Cons: Traveling 160 km per day to get to work

Great oppotunity to learn

the experience that I had was great and the company allows for employee development and provide on job training where I was afforded the opportunity to drive my own development from being just an engineering graduate from university to a certificated engineer. however the number of graduate in take is a lot which has a down impact on appointment after completing with the graduate programme.

Pros: Great learning curve and exposure
Cons: to get exposure and experience needed, one needs to go to work on some weekends and after hours.

Excellent learning curve

Working in a mining company is quite interesting and challenging at the same time, especially if it is a world leader in the industry and has more than 45000 employees. A typical day at work involves responding to queries via email, telephone or face-to-face, report writing, following up on queries, communicating with employees, writing reports, investigating matters, etc. You learn to interact with diverse groups of people. You become assertive and to multitask. You also learn to interpret information to those who need clarity. I enjoy it when I am able to resolve issues and to interact with people. You also learn new things each time you talk to someone. The most challenging aspect of the job is people who are not cooperative and those who do not take accountability. This makes one learn to make tough decisions at times, but at the same time not taking it personal.

Pros: Ability to resolve issues that may arise from time to time.
Cons: Dealing with those employees who always find fault in everything and do not appreciate the good work that they see.
