I have learnt a lot in working with labour, salary negotiations and retrenchments

My typical work days are very long since there is extensive travelling. There are also lots of CCMA arbitrations. My relationship with co-workers is great since I am very out going and fun loving. I have learnt that patience pays. I enjoy travelling. Recruitment since we don't use agencies and portals.

Pros: Training
Cons: Lots of travelling

It was a learning curve

Lewis was one of the companies that I learned a lot from, I got to grow as an individual and helped others grow. Lewis cares for its employees and have programmes such as Employee Wellness Program. It has been great working for such a company.

Good learning curve

As a branch manager my responsibilities is to archieve sales and cash target. No supervisor or Admin manager,or 2IC to assists , Im leading the sales and credit team. Make sure that customer's buy and also pay. Receive and dispatch stock is stock clerk is on leave. Working debtors book,to ensure that we don't have Bad debts. Going out to ask payments to customers who missed their payments. Provide accurate customer's service. I've learnt to interact with people from different cultures. And I also learnt to multi task. I enjoy dealing with cuatomers and assisting them in solving their queries and complaints. And dealing with staff with different age groups,as you know that their behavior and thinking are not the same. Challenging aspects there's a lot of paperwork work

Pros: Able to multi task
Cons: Long working hours with no overtime, no opportunity for promotion.

Lessons learned

With Lewis Stores being my first official job, I haven't really had much experience of what is expected at a workplace. At first, I was appointed as a Porter,my duties was helping the Driver with deliveries and keeping the shop clean and that was it. Not more than five months later the Driver resigned and I had to step in. That was the moment I felt like I needed to prove myself, to show that I'm a hard worker. I was only 18 at the time and working with adults who have had much more experience than you, was proving to be a challenge at the time. I was working alone for months before they finally appointed someone to help me. After a year I was promoted to the Driver. What I enjoy most about working at Lewis Stores was interacting with clients. Some invited me into their homes and some wouldn't let me even enter their front gate. It's also where I've come to realise the good and the bad that one can expect at a workplace.

Pros: Great opportunity for promotion
Cons: Unpaid overtime
