Employee Heath and Wellness Manager: Hillbrow cluster
South African Police Service is a department that is mainly focusing on prevention of crime within the south african community. To have a resilient workers, police officers need to be involved in terapeautic programmes. The re-active and pro-active services are rendered by employee assistance programmes department which I am currently heading ( EHW) . Police members are comfortable in confiding to my unit for the purpose of professionalism e.g Confidentiality. National and International Welfare Days are celebrated. Holistic Approach with a team of psychologists as well as spiritual workers is very essential in effective service delivery. Humanistic therapy and group work is very crucial. Training and Presentation of programmes with the police members. Police officials are in a very vulnerable positions where their lives are constantly in danger. Trauma Debriefing and Maintenance are also rendered to our police official.

Police members and their immediate families are receiving therapeautical services within the department in a form of EAP. Pre and Pro Active services are rendered for effective service delivery. There are different types of referrals to EAP, that is self referral, managerial or formal referral systems. Police officials are exposed to very high risk work loads and they are expected to ensure effective service delivery. Absenteeism, Alcohol Dependency , Financial Management and other psychosocial problems immediately negatively affects our police officials. Initial Debriefing and Formal Trauma debriefing services are rendered. Client's optimal service delivery depends on his or her emotional wellbeing. Team work in the EAP section is vital. Cooperation of other managers in our Programmes is a challenge.

I have been in this field for about 8 years now
I am attached to a unit called flash,I enjoy working there cause it gives me an opportunity to interact with our clients as well my collegues.I have learned a lot through this,as I was taken to a course of Dfo (Designated firearms officer) and a second hand goods course. I enjoyed doing them as it has equipped me for all the situations I may come accross when dealing with the applications,as well as the inspections.
Pros: not at the moment,but definately soon
Cons: Yes it demands long working hours,as I have to take most of the work also at home in order to be completed in time

Excellent learning curve
We are always travelling around to audit the stations around Gauteng province,i have a great working relationship with my co-workers whom i can go to and consult regarding my work before it is officially reviewed by my audit manager.I have learnt to work alone and follow my own instincts and learnt how to approach an individual in a positive manner.I enjoy having to travel around and meeting different people and the most challenging aspect is when i have to approach a high manager who is intimidating but it always turns out well because i approach them knowing what it is i need.
Pros: Great opportunity for promotion and growth
Cons: Long working hours
