Conducive environment

A typical day at work was fun but yet exhausting as the shifts took a toll, we learned to be very effective, efficient and pay attention to deal as we had to make sure that our work that we captured on the system was accurate. Management was fun and very assisting in many ways where we did't understand, the helped out. The culture of the job was amazing as we worked together and encouraged each other to do well in the work place. The hardest part of the job was time keeping and reading data captured by the survey consultant in writing hard to read as the hand writing was different. Adjusting to working in different shifts from working Monday to Friday shifts.

Pros: training applicable
Cons: lower renumeration

NON ROTATIONAL STRUCTURE

I HAVE BEEN WORKING HERE SINCE 2009 AFTER A COMPLETED MY TWO-YEAR DIPLOMA IN STATISTICS AND I WAS WORKING IN A DATA ANALYST TRAINEE FOR ONE AND HALF YEARS.I HAVE NOE COMPLETED MY BACHELORS IN MATHEMATICS AND STILL STUCK IN DATA COLLECTION AND CAPTURING FOR ALMOST 7 YEARS AND THERE IS NO CHANCE OF GROWING(AT LEAST FOR NOW), AND THAT LEAVES MY MIND IDLE AND THE MATERIAL THAT I HAVE LEARNED ARE GOING TO WASTE AS I DO NOT LEARN ANY NEW THINGS,SO MY DAY IS A TYPICAL 8 TO 4 DAY WITH ALMOST THE SAME ROUTINE.

Pros: CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT IN TERMS OF BURSARIES
Cons: POSTS HAVE BEEN FROZEN FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS DUE TO RESTRUCTURING

The great learning curve

Working at statistics SA has given me a opportunity and exposure to data engineering I have established a great working relationship with my colleagues in a sense that they always ask me to do things for them and I faithfully do and deliver on time, this is to say I am reliable. I have learned to do any kind of work no mater how difficult, small or big it is because at the end you get to be exposed and gain experience. The most challenging aspect of the Job is that there is lot of work to do but there is no enough staff to do it which leaves me with having to do work of three people that are vacant and the department has frozen the posts.but still work progresses and I am faithfully delivering.

Pros: Great opportunity to learn different design of what could have been done by others.
Cons: More tasks to do in a short space of time.

Great exposure to data output

My work environment requires me to work in a team as we work with complex and large data sets. And I have to communicate findings with different internal and external stakeholders in order to meet their needs. I enjoy the challenges of collecting data at households and making that information tell a story about the living conditions of south Africans. There is so much outputs that can be produced from one survey and my current role exposed me to that. The most challenging aspects is that data collected is from households and we request sensitive information such as income and health, people do not react well.We collect sensitive information thus have to deal with lots of refusals and resistance from the respondents.

Pros: exposure to important issues affecting our society
Cons: fieldwork
