City of Cape Town Reviews

Excellent learning curve

During a typical work day, one of my biggest tasks is prioritizing the day’ tasks and assisting on the progress on various outstanding projects. I like to meet first thing with my Superintendent on Mondays to discuss our priorities for the week, then meet again in the middle of the week to give feedback on progress, and once at the end of the week to discuss goal setting for the next week. I also schedule work according to complaints from residents like C3 notifications and M4 notifications via SAP Production, which are programmed for the week in order for all Supervisor Drivers to complete tasks. I also attend midweek meetings where I take minutes. On Fridays, I make sure all tasks are completed and I've sent all the necessary communications via email and in person. Finally, I create a list of priorities for next week and later the day, discuss with the Superintendent.

Pros: Really a great opportunity for growth.
Cons: Festive holiday hours as a contract worker - not to be able to take leave at all.

Opportunity for Growth

Working for a large organisation such as the City of Cape municipality creates an opportunity to develop into the best that you can since the organisation presents formal study as well as developmental training opportunities. There is also opportunities for secondment to other departments in order to gain necessary exposure and thus gain a deeper understanding and respect for other departments within the organisation.

Pros: excellent work security
Cons: difficult to implement new strategies and innovation

IT Profesional

• I demonstrate courage and optimism in the face of ambiguous challenges, for which there are no obvious answers—I am fleet-footed when work pivots, quickly making sense of the change so that I can point the team in the right direction. • I am curious and passionate about project and program management—the rhythms and dynamics that make it work, across a wide range of operations. • I bring a fusion of systems thinking and creativity in my ability to generate original ideas, solve complex problems, and understand all the forces required to effect change. • I love collaborating in teams of diverse talents and skills—and I help each person show up as the best versions of themselves.

Pros: Get to know Public Sector
Cons: Traffic

Good working environment with skills upliftment

Worked in high voltage cable for 22 years and I think I reached my potential for growth. Treated me well over the years by allowing me to advance, skills upliftment and furthering my degree. Culture within the section was non biased and catered for all religious beliefs. Typical day would be setting out all tasks for field staff and always interacting with staff during the day. I enjoyed learning new things on a daily basis from anyone of my staff, always had a open door policy. Most challenging part was to deal with staff issues, this brought about people skills for me.

Pros: Looking for new challenges
Cons: Always available and willing to learn

I work for the Citynof Cape Town

I have been working in the City of Cape in the transport division for almost a year . I have been appointed as clerk when I began and withing three months I was appointed as a system controller for the my Citi Centre . Typical day at work would be communication with bus drivers about routes and being on schedule , sending out emails , creating reports .the relationship with my co workers we always professional but helpful to learn and create new ways of working with the system . Most challenging aspect is not having the right equipment to update the system or get hold of buses . What I enjoy the most is learning something new everyday about the system and getting to know my colleagues better so there the understanding of how each one works.

Pros: Good workforce
Cons: Shifts that get changed all the time

A day in the City of Cape Town

A working day is never predictable . Always prepare for unexpected requests internal/external, My main function was administration of all new student intakes amounting to over 100 learners. My core function HR,other functions consisted of office admin and management ad-hoc requests. Challenges: lack of support from management. Completing others work, to lazy do to it themselves. Mostly I enjoyed, encouraging learners, to feel like they belong and building one-on-one relationships with my colleagues, having a different relationship with each one. Suffice to say working as a public servant is extremely challenging because it encompasses all types of backgrounds.

Pros: attending various course
Cons: being held back
