I work in a power plant, we generate electricity. My typical day to day job and dress code are not formal is strictly hard hat, safety boots and reflector jacket and trouser. Above all I still do administrative work of compiling procedures and policies with the power station. The most challenging part of my day to day to work is that I stay in Pretoria and travel to Komati power station daily I have been doing this for 7 years and 8 months this shows my loyalty at work and also the willingness to travel. My work starts at 7:15 where I should have the presentations for the services providers ready by 7:30 and I knock off 4:30 travel back to Pretoria. with that being said I enjoy working with people from all levels , from the general manager to the cleaner as I have to also give training on the environmental awareness's.

Cons: Travelling from Pretoria to Middelburg daily

Energy Management System Technologist, based on System(SCADA) Configution Managent System
I help telecontrol technicians with configuration, modification and testing of ERTU( Enhance Remote Terminal Unit) on different Transmission and Power station sites. The ERTU is the equipment which collect data from the main server and sent it to the primary plant and visa versa, it collect information from the Primary plant back to the main server. I have to compare the data tributes they have downloaded on the ERTU and the one mapped on our database if they correlate, and also to check the communication path, if it is properly configured for the circuits to work and perform at optimal level. This what excite me the most, to fix and correct the database when requied. and assisting the Controllers to navigate the system, when they hit the snag.
Pros: Great environment to grow and to learn, even if you working standby duties, you get excited to learn something new.
Cons: Lackof promotion and recognition and currently we are not eleigible for bonuses

It was an excellent learning curve for me
Eskom is an excellent employer with a good culture, ethics and takes priority on the safety of its employees. Eskom is a reputable organisation. Takes good care of its employees well being.

Upgrading my studies
I am enthusiastic, self-motivated and conscientious person, who is always willing to be involved. Through school and work experience I have learn how to lead a team and set goals and how to engage in action orientated behavior. I am also creative and easy going always ensuring that I operate with high level of integrity. My open mindedness and friendly personality allows me to relate well with other personnel and I can coordinate activities, resources and time. I like working in an environment that is supportive, challenging and which encourages individual initiative. I am highly motivated to accept responsibility and to gain exposure in a climate of continuous learning also I believe that it is of crucial important to engaged in further development in your company. Being on the client's side.
Working for the client was a great shift in the way I had been doing things in the past. Coming from the Contractors background, I had to accustom myself with new habits, change the mind set.

Excellent
Good company to work. Eskom still has market related salaries, great and competitive benefits. It is very difficult for other companies to top Eskom salary and benefits even if the post is higher than that occupied at Eskom.

Gaining experience
Eskom has equipped me with skills necessary to complete any task given, I’ve learned how to communicate with project stakeholders, problem solving and working under pressure as we are expected to meet our quarterly targets as agreed between Eskom and Departments of Energy. It has not been easy as we were dependent on other departments in order to execute our project and also finding out that the tools that will enable us to execute our job effectively and efficiently are not in place, but I have learned to be involved from the beginning even though we are at the end of the chain so to eliminate hiccups that we are faced with when executing the project. It has been nothing but pleasure to work for Eskom and have learned a great deal but I feel it is time to move on as we do not know what will happen with our jobs in the near future.
Pros: Project execution is a great department to work at and it keeps you at your toes. It helped me a great deal in executing project
Cons: Staff that are resigning are not replaced, ending ups doing their jobs. Frequent Change of Management which caused instability within the department.

My time with eskom i have learned a lot of things
It was a great experience with eskom i startedwith eskom through a learnership program where i have learned how to behave myself as an employee since it was my first experience to be in a working environment ftom school.to interact with people it helped me to grow and manage diversity easier.i have learned to operate electricity, doing maintainance,installation,jow to handle customers.i have learn to treat everyone with respect regardless of their positions.i have learn much on how to maintain a team work spirit always at work for us to enjoy being there in our company. The challenges i have experienced mostly was when the power is off and the customers were very angry for me it was a big chellenge cause customers comes first and during that time i feel like am failing them.
