Excellent learning environment

As the Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) Executive, I am responsible for developing and executing on the ESD strategy for the entire Edcon Group. My primary role is to identify strategic pillars for the development of the ESD strategy for each business unit and chain in the group and to compile a strategic plan to achieve the entire group's strategy. The main key performance indicators are the ESD score on the B-BBEE scorecard, the number of enterprises in the supply chain of the group and the amount of procurement spend that each enterprise contributes to. This means strategic, innovative and relevant SMEs must be identified, prepared and mentored by my team such that they are approved by the merchant teams, the sourcing teams, the finance teams and the legal teams. The role is multidisciplinary and requires an in-depth understanding of the Group's strategy at each business unit level, entrepreneurship and challenges of start-ups, investment and finance.

Pros: Great opportunity to make an impact in the South African economy
Cons: Resource constraints

Learning curve

Good experience. Lots of stigma of you are young manager. You get to work with different people, you must be emotionally intelligent as a manager. You need to give yourself wholeheartedly to your people and your job. You need to show them that you love them and care about their lives, their growth and their backgrounds, if so you will have a team that will buy into you as their leader.

Pros: Greet opportunity for becoming a responsible individual
Cons: Long hours, working on holidays

More than just buying experience

You learn a lot at Edcon. You really become hands on in Marketing and other fields outside of buying. There are plenty of systems that we use and assist in the buying process. Training is also readily available to all employees. The specialists are great mentors and are always helpful. However growth is slow if not at all. You could be an assistant for over 10 years without a shot at being a specialist buyer. The salary gap between specialists and assistants is also ridiculous. Even though you do work just as hard.

Pros: Experience
Cons: No growth

Management opportunity

A typical day is driving sales, by motivating my stuff to go out and do their best to achieve our daily target, something that we do as a whole. The most important thing to me is; to keep our customers happy by striving for excellent service, this include solving the queries they might have; as speedily as possible. Achiving our monthly targets brings most satisfaction, to know that we worked hard as a team. In retail I have learnt that relying on our strengths is highly important, because we contribute as a whole to our success. The most challenging aspect of my job is pushing for sales during the times of the month where there is a low customer feed to our store.

Pros: In cellular industry there is always something new to learn.
Cons: Indeed, long long hours, and under stuffed.
